Can you use flys while float fishing w a center pin reel?

Absolutely...What got me into center pinning was catching Steelhead with a fly under a float using my spinning rod. I realized I was missing out on more hits because I couldn't get the drift right.

But sure, you can use fly's with center pinning.

Do you use the same rig as any other float method Ron? Shot it out and such?

uptracker,
Now I do, yes. When I took the Steelhead on the fly and float I really didn't know anything about shotting or center pinning. But I knew there had to be a better way, I knew it was just dumb luck on my part that I caught a few.

What I have been doing lately is adapting standard Steelhead fly patterns to jig hooks as beadhead jig/flies so they hang level below the float. It doesn't matter about egg patterns, any old way they ride is fine. But the main Steelhead run is finished here, just a smattering of a Spring and Summer runs here and there. I'll have to wait until next year to try the adapted patterns...but I have high hopes for them. I'll keep you posted.

I'm gearing up for the soon to happen Shad and Striper runs.

Cheers, Ron

I run flies with my pin on a regular basis(just think indi nymphing with 100'+ drifts). The best part is you get the purists scratching their heads when they see some supposed bait slinger catching fish with nymph imitators not attached to a flyrod:lol: .
I like to run the shot set-up similar to a bait rig(tapered down) and "trot" the reel to get flies out in front of the float[downstream]. The best part is ,when you catch a steel(or any fish for that matter) with this method, you can rest assured it's not foul hooked!
I've only been centerpinning for a couple of months now and haven't had a foul hooked fish yet(I had a big problem with that while fly fishing for steelhead;not very sportsman like:rolleyes: ).
....And besides, centerpinning is the most fun I've had fishing since I was a kid!

Good luck and give it a try,you won't be disappointed!
