Fished near Mio from 11-4:30 pm. The day started off slow with high winds and mostly cloudy skies. Didn't see any risers or hatch activity so I opted for an olive woolybugger #12.
The weather got better by 1:00 and the fish started to turn on. Landed a dozen or so Browns and Bows from 6-10 inches.
Then, at 2:45 I caught a nice one! A seventeen inch Brown. This is the biggest trout, outside of the Proud Lake put 'N take fishery I have caught so far. That fish made the whole day worth the trip. The thought of trout smothered in morels came to mind, but I released him.
Not too long after, the skies totally cleared and it looked like a hatch was on. I'm not up on my bugs, but they looked kind of pale and were about size 14-16.
Wind conditions made it hard for me to get a good dry fly presentation, so I switched to wets. I drifted a #14 Royal Coachman where I saw fish rise, BAM! BAM! Two ten inch Bows in two casts!
This is my third trip to the AuSable and I have had good luck on all three trips. I LOVE this river!
BTW, my sister came out of the woods with 73 morels.
