Poster contest to raise awareness about invasive species

LANSING — Mid-Michigan middle-schoolers are invited to enter a statewide poster contest to raise awareness about aquatic invasive species, State Representative Dick Ball announced last week.

"Help Protect our Waters and Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers!" is open to students in grades 6-8. Students are asked to design an 11-by-17-inch poster to convey a message about how to keep aquatic invasive species from spreading to new lakes and rivers.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for young people to use their creativity to deliver an important message to all Michigan residents," said Ball, R-Bennington Township. "We must do all we can to stop invasive species from gaining a foothold in our lakes and rivers, and raising awareness about the threat is a great way to start."

Posters can be in full color or black or white, using pencil, colored pencil, watercolor, pen and ink, and/acrylic paint. Students are to include an explanation, not more than 150 words, describing the information presented in the poster.

The winning poster will be selected based on the accuracy of the message, legibility and ability to be reproduced. The state will select first- and second-place winners from five regions of the state.

All submissions must be received by April 25. Visit the Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Week Web site at www.michigan.gov/deqaquaticinvasives for more information.
