Just heard the presser on 1270. GREAT job to Stevei Y and Ken Holland locking this guy in for 7 years. Have not heard what the deal is for ($), all I know is, IMO, he's worth it.

That is a huge relief. I thought for sure he would be pulling a Federov!!

Did you guys see him in the playoffs? :dizzy:

I'm not a Datsyuk-hater, but they should have waited to see how he played this year in the playoffs. He wasnt that bad last year, since he was injured and missed Game 1, but still managed 3pts. Ah well. Hopefully it's not huge and is around $6mill. Sources are saying it's between 6 & 7...

They needed to resign him, that would have been a huge blow to the team chemistry. I love watching the mind blowing Datsyukian Moves:xzicon_sm

I am hoping that his stent without Zetterburg has gotten him ready. He had to step it up and I think he did. Hopefully he will carry the curve of Zetterburg getting back into game shape

The guy has just incredible skill and imagination. As far as playoff record goes, you win as a team and you lose as a team, anything else is crying over spilt milk. There are 26 guys who will tell you just the same.

I for one, am glad to hear that he will remain a Red Wing!!

During last Saturdays game, Brett Hull stated that he didn't think he would resign with Detroit. He said that he felt that he may of had some conflict with the coaching staff. Guess he was wrong!

$6.7mill a year... :help::help::rant:
Way to long for that much $$.

Sorry, but this isnt a smart move in the cap-era. There are many better players getting less money than that..

I think it's a good move. He's only getting better and a bit more physical. He even threw a few checks this year! The combination of Hank and Datsuk could be one of the best ever if it lasts any length of time. Brett Hull sure liked playing with them. Here's to a good long playoff run!!!

Bro, are you being serious?:tdo12: This is a brilliant move! The guy is a 100 point player. He's close to, might finish the season with 90 points. And he has a horrible October. He had like a 10 game pointless streak. If he was this hot all season, he coulda been up in the top 3 point getters. Possibly only 6-7 points behind Sidney Crosby. And you think 6.7 is to much. Heck no. Trust me, when Sidney's rookie contract is up next year, you can bet your bottom dollar he's going to be getting the max (7.9) contract per year for a long long time. Same with Ovechkin. And Dats is an unreal regular season player. Granted, I'm a little irked with his postseason resume, and I'm nervous about his next post-seasons, but the guy is a point+ a game player. And that at least gets you into the post-season, after that, anything can happen and you hope alot of other guys get hot. I love this move. Plus, the other thing your forgetting. The NHL works off of profits and revenue sharing. The Cap goes up every year, just like the NFL. Kinda like inflation. This year it's going up 5 million (at least is sounds like according to Bettman) to around 49-50 million. 4 years from now, if the cap grows to all of a sudden, say 59 to 62 million, then Dats' deal now becomes a huge bargain. Know what I'm sayin.

This is a great move. Again it shows why the Red Wings are the epitome, and the envy of the NHL. This move keeps Dats off the market, and away from a small market franchise that overpays through the roof. It shows dedication, and loyalty by the franchise. It sends a message to the teams veterans, rookies, and soon to be impending UFA's soon entering the open market. And believe me, they all talk. They share lots of info about which owner/front office is just a joy to play for.;):)

FYI, long way to go until July 1st, but if Bert (see ya Lang!) doesn't work out, I'm hearing Ryan Smyth's name linked to Detroit/Toronto already.:dizzy::lol: Kenny and Co. are the man.

6-7 million I think may be a little high for a contract with that longevity in it and hope it is lower. The dollars right now are simply just rumors but the facts will come out after the playoffs. I am glad this happened as right now I am eating a good plate of crow. I thought for sure the kid was a bit stuck on himself after wanting Joe Thornton and Dany Heatly money 2 years ago. He certainly did not live in that talent pool 2 years ago and I am still not convinced he is that good to be mixed with that bunch. If I had to pick 2 of the 3 I would pick Joe or Dany first and then Gag-Zucks. However, I do respect this kids talents and he does have some of the best moves in the NHL so my hats off to the Wings for tying the kid up. Now if the Wings could tie up a great goaltender for the future that would be a better move yet. I smell a trade.

On another note it has been a while since I chimed in on a "Hockey by Jigawhat" thread so I could no longer resist the temptation now that some time has passed on some predictions I expressed about Sid the Kid and Alexander Ovechkin before they played there first NHL games. None of you following this thread wil likely catch on as this portion and is mainly meant for the "Jigster" to read< but truct that it is all friendy banter.

Sooo Jigs, what do you think about Sid the Kid and A.O now peaches??? Huh??? c"mon man, you gotta give me my due here :) . We never did hit a local pub and argue these points 2 years ago over a beer. Maybe we should do this soon and each eat up a plate a crow and come to peace over a mug-o- suds ?? :yikes: I'll fess up, Gag-Zucks wasn't the arrogant pompus starstruck punk I thought he was....There I said it :chillin:

Eklund is the worst trade prognosticator in the world, although lots of people swear by him and his "contacts", TSN even had him on their trade deadline show despite the fact that he is almost always wrong on his speculations.

Awful deal. Fisheater I almost always agree with you, but Kenny screwed up big time. $6.7 mil is too much for 3 years, let alone 7. If we are offering him superstar money for the next 7 years of his career, he needs to make under $6 million per year. All this talk about signing him before the playoffs is garbage. Kenny didn't want him to have a stellar post-season and seek money elsewhere, but how much more could this guy make? If he does have a great playoffs, will someone give him $7.5m or more? No way!

I do agree that if the cap significantly rises over the next few years, it will seem better, but Datsyuk is 28, typically the prime of a forward's career. If he doesn't get 100 points next year, then I doubt he ever will. He's going to be making superstar money until he is 35 years old! Remember Sergei Fedorov and his lackluster years after his big payday? Only when his contract was up did he perform up to expectations. Comparing him to Crosby is ridiculous, he would never be near Crosby if he was at this pace all year, and even that is a HUGE hypothetical. Crosby is getting better, after only 2 years in the pros, while Datsyuk is 28. Crosby will be putting up 140 point the next few years, and I'd be pleasantly surprised if Datsyuk puts up 100 even once. Crosby will be making over $7.9 by the way, as the cap will be even higher, and the max will be closer to $10 million, though I doubt he will get max.

For the record, I do think that Dats will have a good playoff this year, he is due, considering he is that talented, and tying him up long term is good, but I still get sick thinking about this deal.

The cap can go DOWN you all know, right? We'll be paying 6.7mill to a 35 year old eventually, too. Is he going to be playing at this level when he's 35?

FD, welcome back, my friend! Need another helping?
Sure, I'll give you your due. Those kids are on a different level. Truly met and exceeded my expectation, that is for sure! But, if I dig back into the memory banks here, I'm not sure I ever disagreed with you on that point. I recall a comment that started this hilarity... something along the lines of "SC & AO...will make Datsuyk look like a 3rd liner." Or was it even "4th liner"?!? I can't remember that far back.
Either way, I will still contend that if you were to put those kids on a team as diverse as the Red Wings with its spread out talent, sure you'd see them racking up big numbers. Just not like that are now. Maybe breaking 100, prolly looking more like Datsuyk and healthy-Zetterberg numbers. (ya know, around a point+ a game) But of course that's just my opinion. :D
As always, all in good fun, FD. And you name a place, I'd love to meet up for a playoff game this post-season and have that beer... And give you another lesson in "Hockey by Jigawhat"...
