Red squirrels are just a little bigger than a chipmunk. Fox squirrels are the largest squirrels in MI. Better make sure you know what you're shooting along with the season and license requirements.

Red squirrels can go down a chimney and end up in your house or cabin. They can make a real mess. I had one in my place in the summer. They will also go into the walls and attic. You can make a small box and put a rat trap into it. I only had a few, now there are alot of them.

My BIL has them in the attic of his garage. I have put numerous traps in there and they are still there. The have ruined the insulation and have made a mess in everything stored up there. I shoot (at) every one of them I see.

Sad-they were there before the sunflower seeds. They are concentrated now. Cant expect then not to-like being on welfare-you feed they will come.

My neighbor feeds and I cant plant a garden cause the deer eat it foe I can. She thinks they are cute or something. The funny part is the deer come in the middle of the night mostly. Two years ago between Aug 1 and Nov 1-- 5 of her deer were killed coming to the feeder. That is 10-15 grand for her deer???

What is 10-15 grand for her deer? A fine?

You can plant a garden with plenty of deer nearby. We have a bunch of deer here and there are 3 runways that go right by the garden that is closest to the house (even more for the one in back).

People think you have to have a 15' fence because that's how high a deer can jump. Nonsense. We put up a 4' fence and a single strand of wire about 4-5 inches above that and have never had a problem with deer getting in. These are not small gardens either.

That is funny! Just this past year I was hunting and only seeing squirrels. The pats, rabbits are scarce, but red, black and fox squirrels seem to be all over. I watched 15 different ones during gun season. No bait of any kind either, only oaks, spruce, and cedar.

I am making sure my .22's are sighted in for September.

Did you try rat traps with peanut butter?

high velocity pellet gun takes care of those rodents.:D only problem is you can shoot as many as you want, they keep multiplying:(

Red squirrels may be taken year round but a valid small game license is needed. They don't fall under the doing or about to do damage exception so keep that in mind.

make a trip to join michigan squirrel dog association for one of our buddy hunts. it will open a new world to you. you might even stop chasing those silly deer. That is funny! Just this past year I was hunting and only seeing squirrels. Yup, but my BIL has to contribute some effort too. He hasn't closed off the entrance so I ain't about to expend the effort either.

Yah, but it makes me feel better. I got 7 so far. I hit another 3 or 4 but didn't put a good hit on them. I found pellets with a little polymer ballistic tip on them, and they do a number on those tree rats. Shooting an old Crosman 760 Powermaster, open sights. :D

It's very unlikely, but I would make sure they're not flying squirrels as I'm pretty sure they are protected. They can do as much damage as red squirrels, though.

Flying squirrils only come out at night. Red squirrils are what you have. I fond one in my toilet this year. drown:one_eye: , must have come down the roof vent. I have shot those things till I coud shoot no more and it didnt appear to make one bit of difference in the long run. But by all means shoot away, it is great target practice with the 22.

I had a squirrel come down my chimney and through the furnace vent into the utility room evidently just after i came home from work 2 months ago. I was in my den on the computer and kept hearing what sounded like someone knocking on my picture window in the living room. After about 10 minutes of this noise i walked out and seen the squirrel jumping on the couch back and trying to dive out the window which of course was glass. This was kinda funny, I seen a bunch of slobber marks where it kept bashing its face into the glass every attempt to dive out. I opened the front door and screen door and it walked out.

I too am plagued with black squirrels, grey squirrels, red squirrels and chipmunks. They target my bird feeder on my deck that is no more than 18 feet from where I type this. A french door is usually open and it is a clear line of sight from my computer chair to the bird feeder.

Crossman pump up bb/pellet gun has had no affect. Even pumped to the max it will only take out the chippies and reds but usually just bounces off the others. Haven't tried pellets yet and really don't want to take out the blacks and grays but they are tempting fate as they rob my feeder.

There are quite a few new "hunting" pellets out there that work great. If you hit them in the boiler room, they're history. As for bird feeders, the only one I saw that really works, is one on a steel pole, greased so they just slip down every time they try climbing up.
I whacked another 3 last weekend myself. It definately has an effect on the population.
I also found, that a small cup of moth balls in key spots really helps too.

These pellets have never failed me. I've hit them in the guts (not on purpose...) and they still died within 30 seconds. I'm shootin em out of a Gamo shadow 1000 at about 15 yards avg. Have killed fox squirrels down to chipmunks.

After they chewed up all the wire in our boat and snowmobile trailer at our cabin they've been #1 on our most wanted list. The pic above is of my buddy who put one out of OUR misery.
