View Full Version : What if pigs replaced deer?

Would it really that bad if pigs became established and pushed out the deer? Perhaps it'd be a blessing in disguise? Just hear me out on this one ;) ...

No one would moan and complain about the DNR giving out too many kills tags and there not being enough pigs to hunt because we couldn't really keep them in check as well as deer.

No one would complain about their being a youth season for hunting pigs like people do for hunting deer.

No one would be complaining about archery hunters shooting too many because archery wouldn't prove to be as easy on thick-skinned pigs when compared to deer.

No one would complain that gun season was too long/short/ect because the season would be year round!

People wouldn't complain as much about hunting over bait.

People wouldn't complain about people shooting pigs too small, the wrong sex, ect.

Trophy hunters wouldn't complain about meat hunters, meat hunters about trophy hunters, still hunters about those that like doing drives, QDMers about average hunters, and those who can/can't afford license increases.

Maybe pigs wouldn't be such a bad idea if it resulted in sportman and sportswomen not complaining about one another so much all the time!

What if? Then we'd just get the Quality Tusk Management crowd trying to shove their elitist ideology down eveyone else's throats. Or someone else complaining that the big boar they scouted all summer was shot by a youth hunter. Or, .....................................
There are always those who can't feel comfortable in their own skin unless and until they can get the rest of the world to do things exactly the way they do, like the same things they do, and think the same way they do.

Good point. I can see it happening. Where have they ever stopped the wild boar from moving in to new grounds. First Texas wanted them and now they can't contol them. They do a different kind of distrution in that they uproot the plant instead of browse on it. I can see wide open spaces instead of forest, yuk that sucks. Upper Michigan will become prairie land? The deer won't have any food because the pigs would have taken care of that. Probably a good idea to take them out every chance you can and regulate what the "fenced in" places are allowed to bring in because fenced in doesn't allways stay fenced in.

Yep. Personally, I'd rather not see pigs take hold despite things looking a bit grim these days. There going to raise hell on the overall environment. I hope some sarcasm was sensed in my original post. I was struck with the humorous thought earlier that perhaps there wouldn't be so much badmouthing and complaining if everyone had pigs to hunt instead of deer since they are nearly impossible to manage from the sounds of things.

If pigs replaced deer, most of those hunters who claim that they're meat hunters would take up fishing because pigs don't have spikes growing out of their heads. IMHO

I still find it hard to beleave about pig because on tv you see texas deer hunting good mexico deer hunting good alabama deer hunting good kill as many deer as you want almost there alot of farm field here for deer to eat out of.I find it hard to beleave. with all the deer hunter in the woods at deer hunting season I dont think the pigs would have much of a chance the get out of hand.

More liscensed deer hunters in the woods of Michigan every fall than in entire U.S. military, thats all the branches combined:yikes: The pigs won't take over if we have anything to say about it. There would be alot of pork BBQ's though while thinning them out.

I'd hate to see the pigs replace deer. BUT, I would like to see a pack of pigs square off against a pack of wolves. I think that would be pretty entertaining, and it'd be tough not to put $$ on the pigs.

of course there is invironmental impact, unlike deer pigs root deep into the soil damaging roots and topsoil plants and creatures that our northen forests depend on.
farm crop dammage? well theres another concern. pigs do much more physical dammage to crops then deer do.
other forest animals? will they be able to compete with an introduced speci? maybe,,,maybe not.
pigs have been known to attack and injure people, kids in the woods would be at substantialy increased risk.
i suppose its to late to worry about all this now.

Thanks, the 1st thing I thought of was, if you think you've seen degraded habitat from deer...you haven't seen anything compared to what pigs can do. But you've said exactly what I was going to contribute. :)

I know zilch about feral pigs, but wouldn't they be pretty easy hunting? I can't even imaging a running shot being all that hard.....a few years of a no-limit/ no closed-season should take care of it....?

Read on another site that some bone head released some pigs in Iowa that he took from Arkansas. They reproduced and have caused a slight problem. According to the author, these pigs are free to be shot on sight. They are working hard to eliminate the problem before it gets out of hand. If you want pork, go to the supermarket. Nothing beats fresh venison.

I think we'll probably end up with both in the end and hopefully the piggies
don't become as prolific as in southern states.
I think they would be fun to hunt, but simply aren't the Majestic animals that the whitetail is.

On a positive note, it'll give those in the whitetail management forum something new to whine about rather than the 5 of 6 same old topics that they do now. overandoverandoverandoverandoverandover.

I don't see any way the pigs can get to be much of a problem here. If their numbers begin to grow, they will be annihilated by us deer hunters. Heck, very few bucks ever even make it past 1.5 years here! Also, the pigs prefer warmer climates. Don't see many migrating here.

No offense, but yes, you are naive. So far there legal to take by anyone with a hunting license for anything during any open hunting season, with not limit ...

They are still here.

This sounds kind of like the UP wolf/deer issue. Only this time it's the LP folks who have their deer hunting potentially threatened.

Come on now, pigs have to eat too. They're part of the food chain. They won't affect deer numbers. The deer don't belong to you anyway. Pigs were here before humans were.

Sound familiar?

I've read that the DNR has planted the Wild Russian Boars to help eliminate the baitpiles and leftovers in the ag fields thus reducing the deer herd and financed by the insurance companies.
Finally the DNR has done something right!

Beats Wolves Anyday IMO!:)

all you guys are missing the point, mmmm......mmmmm......what if pigs could fly? Now that's food for thought. Those hogs with silver wings flying through the forest, what I really mean here is, isn't it enough that they all ready have four wheel drive, and now, imagine if you will, they may be airborne someday? Something to think about!
