Hi All,

What is a good all around GPS that has a decent topigraphical map on it? I am looking at starting to do more hiking and would use it primarily for this and hunting. I like hiking around small remote water ways and ponds. I would like to find some that are not routinely traveled by people in the SW michigan area (allegan and ottawa counties mostly).

I am looking for suggestions, is there a good computer software program so I can have a rough overview of the areas I am looking to go before going?

1) You'll need a GPS capable of holding maps (a memory).
2) A program capable of managing (uploading and downloading) those maps (most mapping units come with such a program)
3) A computer capable of running these programs.
4) Maps are purchased seperately (around a $100 for the topo maps of the USA)
5) Most topo maps are 10+ years old (but topography dosen't change that much).

I'm partial to Garmin, but it may be a matter of preference. I use mine for the same thing you are looking at. I have the Mapsource Topo for my Garmin and also Maptechs Terrain Navagator Pro. Amazing program, it provides all the USGS Topo maps for MI on disc, along with color aerial photos. It is also interactive with a GPS and you can download or upload waypoints, routes or tracks between them.
