I bought my "sportsmans" licenses (this term shows my age...) at Gander Mtn and for my combo deer, received 2 Mich DNR "Kill Tag Backer" cards.
Is this a Gander Mtn thing or a DNR requirement? Just more stuff to carry in the wallet....

DNR...not required though. You don't have to use them I mean.

I never use them as I have heard stories of the licence comming off of the backer.
I just fold my tags NEATLY over a piece of string so that all the writting on the tag can be read. Then I tie it on. My turkey tags are put on a leg so that they can be read.
I read an account of a trapper having the kill tag come off the backer in transit to have the cat offically sealed. He had to use up his second kill tag in order to keep from getting a ticket for no kill tag.

A heads up for those who may be thinking of buying there licenses on line. They come as a print out on a heavy paper. They appear the same as if you bought it at the store but aren't sticky backed.
Kind of a pain in the **** to tag a deer or turkey. I forgot about the several years priors I have complained about them. Oh well maybe next year.

Whatever you do do not use the backer the license can come off for sure i have seen it happen. There was also a story late last year in Woods and water, where a guy was ticketed and trying to fight it, he used the backer to tag something I forgot what it was and it came off in the back of his truck.

If you look closely at the on line (mail order) tags, they have a hole through them that you can pass a line through to tie them off. Not much different than they were for years and years before the sticky backs came out.

I know it happens to bobcat tags up here a lot during the winter...then the guy gets a ticket when he takes it to the DNR. I heard it quite a bit actually.

I believe thats what it was the tag was on a bobcat, ( the story in woods in water) might have something to do with it being cold, or whatever it doesnt stick good then you drive down the highway and the wind blows it off the you are screwed.

I use the backer for the past three years and never have had a problem. The trick is to keep the backer from getting wet, so the license doesn't come off. I will continue to use them makes it alot easier to attach the tag to the deer, I run a zip tie through the hole in the backer and through the back tendion of the deer and the tag is attached.

I had my tag come off the backer for my 9 pt. 2 years ago. What a pain in the butt to go get a replacement tag. All the while thinking of when you'll see the CO's lights. I have a feeling they've heard that "excuse" a few times.

I have posted this two other times to explain how not to have problems with tagging a deer. If you follow this you will not have a problem or stories to post. Pretty easy to do things right instead of making excuses.

While all of us appreciate some good cynical remarks, sometimes crap does happen.

One of my many all-time pet-peeves. I just don't understand the logic behind making 2 different tags:dizzy: . On a side-note,,, if you have the "sticker" tags and the tag backer,, there is NO WAY IN HELL that tag is coming off in transit. Unless of course the animal is tagged improperly.
The backer breaks along the hole and then falls off. The DNR has been informed of this for a few years. Unless the material has changed, which doesn't seem to be the case, it has the potential to fall off. Too bad they couldn't put boehr's 20 paragraph how-to on the backer itself, it'd probably fit with 2 point type, then we could just carry magnifying glasses with us and read the directions. Crap-hole design, mine broke off from the strong UP winds when it was hanging in camp 2 years ago.
To remedy, place the tag end of your tie string along the backer and then peel and stick the tag over it, so now the tag end is taped between the tag and the backer, as well as tied on the deer.

Correct Sib. Cheap plastic. I just use the method of tying the string around and fold the tag over the ends of the string. Stays on at 70 miles an hour and one less piece of garbage to carry, forget, lose etc.

I use a 8 to 10" zip-tie, zip it around the antlers or thru an ear of deer, around the leg of turkey and then fold/stick the licence over the tag/tail end! It's yet to fail me yet! :D

I agree.
I have never had a tag come loose during transport but it is easier ,and I feel safer, with the sticky backed tags wrapped over a tie like others have mentioned. I just seem to forget in my excitement to order the years new licenses and figured I'd try to save someone else the same frustration.
Here's wishing that we have to even worry about the proper tagging of a deer this season.
