I can't tell you where, and can't show you the pictures either. Lets just say they are biting and if you don't get out soon you will miss out!! This warm weather has them ACTIVE.
I personally went 1-4 (not my best day) but others I know did better.

Great...If you can't tell us where you were, why don't you share your techniques that enabled you to hook 4 fish; and you can certainly post pictures, just crop them (or photoshop) so people can tell what's in the background.
I hope you don't take my comments the wrong way, but what valuable information did you actually provide? We can tell you are enthusiastic about your adventures but other than patting yourself on the back and maybe hoping to show your angling prowess, there is little that one will gain from your thread as you share no details, entertaining story, or technical information. It reads like "Hey everybody, look at me!" Please take this as constructive criticism and have a nice afternoon.

And instead of offering some congrats to the guy for sharing his fun, you jump up on your soapbox and start spewing more negativity. Maybe instead of judging someone solely by their post, you could instead offer congrats. Doesn't it get old running someone down just because they don't use the same methods to catch a fish as you?
Chris
yeah, this warm weather has them active alright. ACTIVELY SPAWNING. I fished for a bit today and most of the fish seemed to be on the gravel.:( If gravel fishing is your thing, now is the time.

I don't even know what methods he uses? And I didn't even get it out of the post that he had fun, just that it was not his best day. Why even post? Perhaps I should have sent him a PM...I'll leave it at that:rolleyes:

I don't see where that's a bad thing. Hopefully, they'll do their thing in the high water and get out quick before they get ripped on like salmon up at Tippy.

from what i've seen it seems most of the winter fish are getting it done now, but there are still plenty of chromers laying around in the holes. today might have been the best day of steelheading i've ever had. found a few places were pretty thick with fish today, and i heard from someone that the steelies at 6th st. are thick which probably means some fish are still coming. don't worry even if they are getting on the gravel and trying to get out, the droppies are always hungry.

All I really meant for this thread was to say that if you are a steelheader, or an aspiring steelheader (as some have indicated lately) NOW is the time to get at it!!
But if you must know, all fish taken on spawn. Couple under a bobber, and a couple bottom bouncing.
As for the photos... I'm no good at the whole cropping thing... so I'll just keep the pics to myself. Now, if I could only get a hen....

I think for a lot of us, that time has past, but thanks very much for sharing your technique. I will have to try that spawn under a bobber trick sometime:)

I really don't care how anyone takes fish as long as they put them back. I think some of you are confused, its my experience that most of the fellows spin fishing, bottom bounceing, float fishing etc are fishing deep holes and runs. Its the self proclaimed purist flyfishmen ripping fish off of beds. JMO

Its the self proclaimed purist flyfishmen ripping fish off of beds.
I have to agree somewhat, and some people even pay guides to do it. Personally, I don't flyfish for steelhead much anymore and usually stop fishing steelhead once the fish start to hit gravel. Don't fool yourself into thinking its only the "flyfishmen ripping fish off beds", however, as that's a pretty big generalization. Its safe to say that there is a much higher percentage of fish "foul-hooked" by guys fishing gravel, regardless of technique, due to fish heavily concentrated in shallow water and unwilling to bite. Have a nice day!

hmmm....well personally i don't keep hardly any steelies, maybe one for the smoker and one for spawn. (The hen I got the other day was very good deep fried for lunch!) I don't have a problem with the guys who do take fish, however it is absurd to see people stringing up every fish they catch, and for some reason this seems to happen more with the people at the dams. There is nothing wrong with keeping fish now and then, but there is no need to keep every fish that is caught, especially from mostly wild streams, that is where my problem with all of the catch and keep comes into play.

Way off topic guys. Im not closing it, although I probably should. BTW I went fishing this weekend too, I got skunked out on the pier and hit a few down south in a trib.
The only hen we brought to bank was spawned out. We floated spawn, and found all the fish in feeding lanes as opposed to the deeper slower holes. Saw a few fish up on gravel doing there thing... but with the high water they got left alone. Also saw 2 pike holding in some slack water, I would imagine steelie smolts make a good dinner for them.

Well...yeah, because it's the only time they're able to catch fish. Experienced steelheaders don't have to fish dams or be any where near gravel in order to catch fish. In addition, there's some things you should never have to say if you're a steelhead fisherman and one of those things is, "It's in the mouth!"
They're not salmon.

Make up my mind? Since your obsessed with going back through all my posts, perhaps you might want to re-read them yet again and then maybe it'll dawn on you on as to what my point is.
1) Steelhead on gravel will bite during certain periods of time. There is no need to snag them.
2) I've never once said I won't fish gravel, so I don't know what you're trying to prove with that one. Again, re-read and you'll see I've openly admitted to going on an egg hunt in the spring. With that said, I don't need to fish gravel in order to catch my fish. I don't need to say anything more than that to justify my fishing skills to anyone.

BTW, I (and others I am sure) were just trying to add some levity to a thread that had gone off track. Id rather have it way off track in silliness as opposed to hostility. It doesnt matter what the "fair amount of 16 year olds" do because it says in the rules that this is a family website and talking about a hooker is not something that needs to be in a fishing report so dont talk about banning someone just because they state the rules to you!

Besides, how do you know what kind of "hooker" we were talking about? This is a fishing thread--seems to me that "hooker" could be taken a number of different ways. Maybe it's you who should get your head out of the gutter and enjoy the decency of this family website. I mean, a "cheap hooker," could be a fisherman that doesn't leave a good tip at the diner. ;)

My kids aren't old enough to read yet. At some point, I'm sure I'll have to explain what a "hooker" is, but it'll more than likely end up being in this context:
"Don't get attached to Daddy's new friend, boys--she's just a hooker!"
Most of us on this site have fun with each other--it's what we do.

The Steelies are biting? Oh yea where?Whether or not they are "biting" is subjective. I almost fell on the ground laughing when I recently read an article on river kings as to what works and what doesn't. I will paraphrase the sentence and make it applicable to us. Those that know will understand...
Spawning steelhead "eat" flies like a guy on a motorcycle going 80mph "eats" bugs.
I have gotten several recent reports from some experienced steelheaders on somewhat smaller waters and its all the same...good numbers of fish in 50+ degree water but they are almost all on gravel, with very few players in the deeper water. Larger waters like the Mo or Big Man probably have more fish in the feeding mode as they take longer to warm up. Good luck if you get out...I am thinking of heading north or hitting the big lake.
