We were up to our property near Hesperia on Saturday, walking along the edge of our alfalfa field and noticed where it looked like someone had taken a shovel and overturned a bunch of chunks of sod in random places near a crabapple tree. Didn't think anything of it, until about 100yds farther there were more spots, except they were in a lot larger area.

The ground was tore up about 6-10 inches down under the soil, with small pieces of sod laying around.

As far as we could tell, it wasn't human made. There would be nothing that anyone would want to dig in those areas, that we could tell. I have never seen a deer dig like that either. I know deer will make deep scrapes, but this was different.

So my questions is, do think that hogs would have done this, or is there another explaination? Sorry, don't have pics, didn't even think about it.

What you described sound like what I had seen when I went along on a pig hunt in Latvia (Eastern Europe). They do a lot of damage like you described. They love to hunt them and they hunt them hard, but I do not believe they make a dent in the population.

Sounds like pig but I dont know for sure.
Take some pics next time out, will help all of us gain some insight on what to look for. I dont even know what their tracks look like.

Im not far from Hesperia, my eyes will be peeled now and when im out fishing the 7 mag will be handy! Newaygo & Oceana countys are maked in red on the DNR map so I think thay means they have been sighted there.

That is definitely hogs, I have taken 4 of them in ogemaw county. If you look in the closest swamp you will find them, but if you do make sure you have a gun because they are having little ones now and are really really mean.

No tracks, the spots looked to be a month or so old, there was probably still snow on the ground when the digging happened.
