When I first regestered whenever I was on line and came to the forums I did't need to enter my user name and password now I do. Why is that. Also I noticed my name not in the people in the forum at the time list and it was before is there something I am doing wrong. OSAGE2ORANGE

Osage,
This is a frequent question, and I think the answer should be pretty easy. Two things effect this. 1 is that you have to make sure your browser settings allow cookies to be stored on your hard drive, the second
element can be explained here:
http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ubbmisc.cgi?action=setprefs
Or just go to "preferences" at the top of the forums page, then follow the instructions to allow your password to be stored for a year.
How to ensure that your browser allows cookies to be stored is pretty simple, but it does differ by which browser you use. Post which browser and version you are using and I will post the menus to go through to adjust your settings.
One note: This site does not show your name in the "Currently Browsing the Boards" field until you post or reply to a post during that session.
Hope I am helpful,
Amos

do you have forums marked in your favorites? if so you need to enter through the home page, thats what happened to mo.

Amos I did what you said and also checked my browser which I had set correctly. Then I tried what RNWIII said because I do enter through my favorites for ease. Guess what he was right you need to come in through the home page. Problem solved. Thanks for the help from both of you.

Bronc,

Unfortunately, I think Netscape version 4.7 may be an oddball. Steve has a post somewhere below soliciting problems about that version. I have moved to MS Internet Explorer on 4 of my 5 machines, and my machine with Netscape is still on 4.5.
Let me describe how to set your cookies on Netscape 4.5, then this week I will upgrade that machine to 4.7 if the conventions are different from 4.5 to 4.7.
Here it is:
From your main file menu, select Edit/Preferences . . ..
Then from the "Categories" column, select Advanced. Under Advanced, the bottom half of the screen refers to Cookies. You can accept all cookies, but I think a good mix of functionality and security is to accept only cookies that will be sent back to the server that set them. I do not think you need to bother with "Notify". You may just select "Accept All Cookies" particularly if you are confident of the sites you visit.
Let me know, and I will post an update as necessary.

The main thing is that assuming you have cookies enabled on your browser, which I'm sure most of you do by default, you have to get the cookies set by this website updated if you want your name to show up on the bottom of the screen and you want the light bulbs to work properly. The easiest way to do this is to go to the top of the forums page and click on "Forums" just under our banner. Then hit the Reload or Refresh button on your browser. You should be all set after that with either browser.
