I've heard that the walleye from Lake Huron travel down the St. Clair River through the lake, down to the Detroit River then Lake Erie each spring to spawn. Is this true? If so, why doesn't anyone fish the lake in the early spring? Maybe a stupid question but I had to ask.

As far as I know, Lake erie fish move to Detroit river to spawn. Lake Huron fish move to St. Clair river, and Lake St. Clair fish move to either the Thames, the St. Clair river, or the Detroit river.

I am not 100% on this but I read somewhere that 45% of the fish that spawn in the maumee river are lake St Clair fish. I think I read that on the maumee website.

I wonder if you could troll the ditch in April and do any good, if the fish are moving in either direction, you would think you could get into a few. Maybe they are already domiciled in the rivers, I don't know.

I forgot about that river. It's in Ohio so I never hear about it much. But I would think that majority of the fish there are Erie fish.

Also we get a run in the Clinton river (spillway)

That's what I wonder.
The guys who fish for steelhead in the clinton are always catching walleyes. Why shouldn't there be fish at the mouth of the clinton in spring?

The spillway is dammed. When the fish spawn out the come back to the lake and stay around metro till the water warms up.:D

Has anyone fished the shipping channel early in the spring?

I read some where that only a small percentage of erie fish actually spawn in the rivers. The say they spawn right out on the reefs in the lake.

If fish travel from Lake Huron to the Detroit River as they say, then why is the fishing so good in Huron, Vermillion and Lorain in mid to late summer?

Maumee River Run
As winter comes to an end and the Great Lakes begin to thaw, nature signals tens of thousands of walleye, some from Lake St. Clair and some from the Western Basin of Lake Erie, to start their annual migration to the place their life began: the Maumee River. The Maumee boasts the largest population of migrating walleye east of the Mississippi River. Read More...

with all dem scrumptious alewives you got over there..i would be surprised them big ol fat walleyes ever left the confines of a recliner on the muskegon bottom to search for the meager pickings of food down this away//and what MAUMEE via michigan, huron, st clair river, lake st clair, detroit river ,erie? sheesh i'm in to the spawn ritual as much as any walleye but i doubt even in my youngers days if i'd swam 600 mile for it!!:yikes: ;)

Those fish in Lorain are the fish that spawn on the reefs. If you watch the reports you can follow their migration through the Islands and out into the open water. There are many diffrent migration patterns in lake Erie, I have my theories and I am sure Everybody else has theirs.

On the same topic, while fishing a tournament in Dunkirk NY there was a fish caught that had a tag from Saginaw Bay. I would not have believed it if I had not seen it with my own eyes.

Saginaw River gets the alot of Huron fish. Also the St. Clair fish are found in the Saginaw and Titt. As well as the other rivers discussed. I have also read that the Thames gets Erie fish as wel as Huron and St. Clair fish.

Fish move all around and spawn all over the place. I don't question why or where they came from. They do run up the ditch in the spring. It very hit or miss. They are more on the move, than waiting to spawn in a single area. Another thing is when they travel there is a LOT of food. emeralds, spots, Smelt traveling at the same time. Early Apr., I have perch fished by the light house next to the shipping chl. and ended up with a limit of nice perch with 3 or 4 eyes on slipbobbers. but like I said its hit or miss. Your better off targeting them in a spawning or staging area. PS early perch are looking for small snails;) Otherwise the lake seems void of fish at times. good luck, good fishing.

Shamey - I don't recall which issue of in-fish or eye-insider Mark Martin was interviewing and he mentioned catching tagged fEEsH from LSC & the deTwaH rEEbaH.
He aslo stated that IF they could get into lake 0
th' woods - they'd go there too!
