Pleased with my Islander Steelheader....very solid reel with great startup. Only downside is its excessive capacity (easily filled with 30# greenspot dacron). Retail around $335, look for sales/specials or consider buying used...usually a few for sale on some of the other web forums.

I own two Raven reels.... the eclipse and the sst 3. I would recomend either of those but would highly suggest the sst3. That reel is very light and smooth. price range from 225 to 275

I like my jw young purist and the bob james, too. Mainly because I can get really messy on my gear fishing the IN creeks, and the spool pops-off on site for a quick swish and rinse free of any debris.

Fished with a hale thought i wanted one till i used it like the reel but the thing weighed alot compared to my mykiss. startup is a little hard due to the weight of the reel. He uses skateboard bearings so and there is upgrade bearings available

well lets not start semantics here boys. i dont like mykiss's or hanson's, but that's just MY opinion. its more of a collector's piece to get your hands on a hale because unlike a mykiss only 25-50 hales are around. but hey thats what keeps this website going...differing opinions:lol:

Hansons already have went up in price. go to ebay you can find a alot of hand made pins for pennies on the dollar. you need enough on the market to make them popular ask people from canada or england about a hale they will have blank looks. ask them about a hanson or a mykiss they will know. Hale is a local guy that local people know of. If you want a collecter buy a clough or hanson.. they are proven. With all the mykiss reels sold now and keith in ak we will see

Just curious...does anyone know how well machined aluminum holds up in the elements when it has not been anodized?

Gunner87, I agree with you on collectibility. A reel would have to be marketed to gain some name recognition.

Personally, I'll happily fish an Islander any day over the above mentioned reels.

I do not know how collectible the Hale reels will be but I do know Danny makes a good reel. I do not think his reels are the best by any means but they do fish well. Both of the reels that I have owned have casted great and have a great start up, although they do tip the scales more than your average reel. From the amount of PMs and emails I have received over the past couple years from posting pics of a couple of his reels, there seems to be a good interest from both Americans and Canadians.

If you are interested in collectible reels the Clough is one of the most highly sought after. I handled one of the Clough Elites and it seemed to be a flawlessly made reel, probably not worth the 3-4Gs if you are going to fish it though.:dizzy:

The Norm McDonald's seem to have a following as well, probably some of the sweetest and smoothest reels that I have fished or seen. I would love to get my hands on one!

If you can find a Hanson they catch a pretty penny as well and will probably gain collectability as time goes on. I have owned and sold allot of different reels, my Hanson I will be fishing until it falls apart. Its lightness, startup, and slim profile are rivaled by few if any.

Other reels such as the Hardy Silexs, Chris Lythes, Apex, and some of the older English made Aerials are sought after as well. If you ask me, they are all useless unless your beating up on the silver with them.:D

In my opinion the islander is a well made mass produced reel, but does not compare to a Hanson, Mykiss, or Hale. I owned an Islander for a couple years and have fished a couple others as well, the start-up on the other reels seemed noticeably superior to me. But then again everyone has their favorites.

Close!;) It's an IST1384F 11'6". The one on the bottom is a 1008 10' 8wt Rainshadow and it works great on the little creeks and rivers.

I built them both.(handles,too)

My IST1384F is one of my favorite rods. Light enough tip to fish light tippet, yet has plenty of ***** in her. Great smaller water rod.

Shaun, you sure have been busy! I like the handle on the Rainshadow. It looks strangely familiar to one I've seen before made by Sniper Creations? :D Looking forward to testing mine on some chins this fall.

Hey Ryan,Be extra careful with the chins on that 1562! Play them out well and you shouldn't have any problems.Just don't go trying to horse a salmon on that rod;) or it could end up like this! :yikes:

The Super Silex by Hardy is a purty nice reel for pinning in my opinion. They cast real nice and give a great drag free drift.Russ

I got a new pin in a odd way! One of my old fly reel's drag busted, and fell off. So with no drag, it works like a centerpin now! Maybe not as well tuned or machined, but I think it will serve the purpose. It has a very low startup inertia, and if I give it a spin, it will go for minutes!

What size reel was it? If it was a 7/8/9 or larger it would probably make one h&** of a creek 'pin!;) Indi nymphing has never been much easier![I plugged a few nice brownies on hare's ears this past Saturday with the centerpin] I leave the fly rod at home now unless I'm hurling streamers at big and uglies!
