Yesterday afternoon I decided to hit those canals one more time before the ice was gone. The ice in the middle was pretty solid underneath the couple inches of slush, and I was using my spud to test the ice as I walked. I sat down in the holes that I slayed em on last Sunday and didn;t catch a thing. I moved about 60 yards south and started catching a few gills. Shortly after that a young man strolled over to fish the holes I had just left. After a short period of no action, he got up and started for the other side of the canal. He took about 4 steps and without warning was up to his shoulders! I watched him struggle to get out for about 15 seconds then reached for my spud to see if I could pull him out. As soon as I started over, he was able to pull himself out. The water underneath him was at least 10 feet deep.
I walked over and said "dude, that scared the ***** out of me". We chatted for a bit, before making the 1/4 mile walk back down the canal ane leaving the ice together. He was a great kid, and I am glad he was ok. We both said that we were done for the year. It is just NOT worth it!
