If you have chance you might want to consider some canals in the next few days. If you do so, you have to use a spud to check questionable ice near the edges or back ends of these canals!
Anyway, I put on miles and miles hunting some canals this past Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Saturday was slow and my girl friend and I only managed 25 or so keepers. Sunday started slow, but we FINALLY found em. Limit of SLAB crappie (up to 2.5 pounds) and Monster Gills (from the tip of my index finger to 4 inches past the palm of my hand!). Besides the 50 crappie and gills, we also managed 25 perch 8 inches or better. My girl friend is hooked on ice fishing now! We had a blast!

Use your spud that canal can get a real good flow during or after rain. The ice can get thin in a very short time there. Some canals don't have a large flow of water, better choice.

Thats the only one I know with public parking close by. Was not aware of the currents in there after rain. Thanks for the warning!

This also brings up a ? for me. What are some good ideas for homemade spuds that you guys have come up with or made?

Can't offer ideas for a home made spud. You can get cheap one for testing the ice for under 20 bucks, and at times for even 10 dollars. This time of year you shouldn't leave home without one.

Figured my cheap @ss will just buy one. Heading out right now. Might try Crocker if the ramp is o.k. and I can get on. Canals are looking to unsafe for my tastes. Thanks...

Sorry, I don't have a digital camera or even capabilities on my phone. All I have is a large roaster full of crappie filets, 4 quarts of blue-gill filets, and a quart of perch filets. :corkysm55
I have been trying to get my son to take pictures of the deer mounts in my living room to post on here for ages and haven't had any luck either.
