Just curious as to what kind of leaders most of you use on your tip-ups. I don't like to use steel leaders. I've been using both 14lb mono and power pro. I like the mono the best but I still seem to get alot of break offs. I switched to power pro but it seems to cut itself off at the knot whenever a fish puts up a decent fight. I would appreciate if everyone would share what kind of leader they are using and how successful it has been for them. Thank you!

I use titanium leader 6 inch, I also put a blade and a few beads above it. I also use a real small split shot above the mardi gras lol.

Clear 30# mono, the way I rig it is , slide a egg sinker on 1/4 oz. then tie on swivel to main line then tie on 30# mono[12-15'']... I use a size 10 treble or smaller.... I like the smaller hook because the fish will take the bait with out dropping it....
It seem to me that when you use a larger hook the fish will strike it but 3 out 4 times they will drop or spit the hook because it is too large....they can feel the hook.... I have been doing quite well with this rig.... just check out my gallery for the season thus far.....

make sure you use a recomended knot with power pro...they have exmples on there site..i use an albright knot to tie my leader to power pro ..yet to have a knot break ..and a clinch to tie on eveything else.....usually use 8 to 10lb either flouro or berkly XL...usually trageting walleye but have landed some monster pike that way just cant mucle em in

Tip up teaser:
I know you don't like steel leaders, but Tyger leader, 15# test is so thin that, IMHO, it is no more of a turnoff than heavy mono. Ditto with earlier post about putting some beads and spinners above the (6") leader. Just started that combo this year, and had more flags than any year before, even when I was using 17# mono for my leader.

What can I say......I thought it was a brilliant stroke of originality on my part, as well. :D I DID add the idea of using a colored egg sinker as well. Makes the set up look like an in-line spinner with a 6" shank on the hook.

Never thought of using beads or blades on the tip-ups to make em' look pretty:). I might as well ask-Do any specific colors of blades or beads seem to produce better than other colors?

Nope! My Dad was doing that back in the late 1940s.

Funny you mention that. The only reason I put them on my tip-up was because I found a jar of blades and beads in my grandfather's sled, couldn't figure out why he had them for ice-fishing, and decided I'd try tying them onto my leader.;)
As for the person who asked about colors, the blades I use are copper colored with red beads. Sometimes it outproduces a normally rigged tip-up and sometimes it doesn't - I guess that's fishing.

I use plastic quick-change clevises on my tipups, because of that question. I have a variety of blade colors and experiment with them. My usual start is to put a red/white w/ silver back on one rig and a silver/blue holograph on the other. I keep green, orange, white and silver blades on hand as well. To keep it simple, I just use chartreuse and orange beads.
