Do I really need to back my main 10 lb. test main Maxima mono line on my new c-pin reel? I would probably put some mono line to back braided line, but I do not understand why should I back one mono line with another mono line?

You dont have too, but that said everyone I know does.
I normally put 100 yards of 20-30lb dacron on. It helps build up your spool to get the fasted retrieve possible.
Good Luck with your new pin.

put like 12lb suffix on..doesnt twist alot great backing...then i usually run a 10lb shocker then 6-8lb leader
I wouldn't back a mono line with another mono. The whole reason you back a reel is to provide a cushion for the mono to squeeze against instead of the arbor. Mono has a stretch to it and during the course of fishing it does get stretched. When its run back onto the reel pressure builds up. In extreme cases it's powerful enough to warp the spool...that happens more often than you'd think. I always use good old woven dacron for backing, 20# usually works fine.
That's my .02 worth.

Well put...I have seen warped reels in person, usually flyreels loaded with Amnesia running line then put to task on snagged king salmon. A little dacron will save a big headache down the road.

What I want to know is: why twist has anything to do with how good a backing line is?
You could twist your dacron backing all you want while wrapping it on the spool and then put your mainline on and it would do the same thing: fill the spool and keep it from warping.

ummmmm, yeah a centerpin is not a zebco 303. now i look at this and wonder if its you being serious or sarcastic. however, looking at some of your other posts here i conclude you are without a clue. the reason for backing on a pin, specifically deeper spooled reels like a islander or tournament drifter is to keep the spool from warping. backing has NO stretch and monofilaments have alot more and not spooling backing can with heavy use cause your pin to warp in some cases ive seen, pretty bad.

You DON'T need backing on most modern reels...I asked the guys at angspec. this very question as I run 15lb mono and want more then a hundred yards of it on...They said, The old pin style reels would warp, due to poorer construction methods/ design etc. They said there is no way theirs will ever warp..Period..end of discussion... I only run backing on my Milner if I want to take up space..half the time I run it half empty as I throws better that way...and so don't waste my time or money on backing...

Mono goes bad after abuse of heat and water...dacron takes alot longer.

I suppose if we all had AngSpecs then we would be OK without backing. Personally, I have seen what mono (with no backing) does to a "modern" fly reel and want no part of it. I change my mono quite frequently so the backing works well as a "cutoff" point on where to retie. Plus, with my Islander, its almost a necessity due to the spool capacity. I can sort of agree with you on some of the reels with limited capacity as they have shallow spools with little room for the spools to warp (as the warping usually occurs off the side of the spool). Only a few more months and we'll be back into river steelies!!!

Yeah, that's understandable, I did the same on my islander..On the angspec it's not a big spool and I found putting backing on really took away from how much mainline I could run...So I asked them and Milner and there is no problem...Might be a mute point back there but I want at least 150 yards on mine for our rivers...not that I expect a fish to run that far but I do go through a bit of line each time and on salmon I like to have more line..

Yeah, I can understand the desire for more mono...as you probably know, its no problem at all with the Islander:lol:

Now that's a fact..you could use a hundred yards of backing and put on what? 250 yards of 15 pound??? Couldn't use that up in a couple years probably..
I gotta say this though..since i'm running my mainline down on the spool of the milner and angspec. it's low enough on the spool that for some reason is casts better...pretty sweet.
