View Full Version : enough BS

I have just about had it with all the BS that I read everytime I log on to this page. Everybody is so suspicous of everyone else's pics or stories or their recounts of events. ****!!! Can we not just so "hey that was a nice shot that you made or nice deer. bear, elk, etc..." Intead of saying that it was photoshoped or manipulated some other way. This page is for decent people who for the most part obey the laws and regulations of Michigan. We don't need a few dips who have to pick apart every pic or post and try to find someting illeagal or photoshoped that they must voice off on. It just cheeses me some of the posts that I read.

lol welcome to this great board that is why i dont post pics to often . Another reason is the fact that if you happen to take a small buck then it is nothing but a pissing match on why you took a small buck instead of a doe

HI! Just learn how to use the "Ignore Member" function. I use it alot. With as many people on this site as there are, you're gonna run into people (and I use that term loosly) that just rub you wrong. I know, I just got banned for 3 days for calling another member a name. So watch your fingers. My advice is just hang with people you like, and stay away from those certain people.

I'm a bit curious.
"....have just about had it with all the BS that I read everytime I log on to this page. Everybody is so suspicous of everyone else's pics or stories or their recounts of events."
"We don't need a few dips who have to pick apart...."
In reality this does happen from time to time. However I'm a bit confused with your use of the word "Everybody" in what you said above as it relates to "...a few dips.." This is an internet site with over 18,000 members and it should be expected that a "few..." will be around to question a photo.
In reality of all the threads you see in this and other forums how many posts do you find where the alarming call of "photoshopped" is used. The percentage is quite minor.
"Another reason is the fact that if you happen to take a small buck then it is nothing but a pissing match on why you took a small buck instead of a doe"
As a moderator in the Whitetail Forums this is something that I, as well as the other mods, pay close attention to. This past firearms season I went through the vast majority of posts and threads where members offered a photo and account of their deer hunting success. Right now I can't recall any that questioned a successful member who took a yearling buck. I am speaking of specific references to what you claim rather than a discussion, usually in the Deer Management Forum, of the value....or not.......of letting yearling bucks go by whether or not the judgement to shoot is based on the antlers or body size.
The comment above suggests that posts such as you mention are rampant here in MS and quite frankly my experience as a mod (we deleted or edit those posts removing the castigating remarks) I can't think of any in the last year although there must have been one or two.

Intead of saying that it was photoshoped or manipulated some other way.
While I have seen some really bad conversations take place on this msg board I have yet to see anyone be accused of manipulating a photo using Photoshop or any other photo editing software. Admittedly I have not followed all the threads in the hunting section. I have followed many threads in the fishing forums and have not seen any accusations like that there. It would follow that there should be a couple at the very least if it was happening here if it really was going on.
I have the feeling that you are reacting to some of the negativity which comes across in some msgs. You could use the tip that "QuakrTrakr" mentions or just skip over the msg that seems to have the negative tone.

I found this listing in another forum I bet we all know people who fit these common forum personalities:
Internet Tough Guy
Proof that the obvious may not be obvious to all, the Internet tough guy forgets the mode of communication that he's using. Constantly threatening people with physical harm and the dreaded ambiguous "consequences," the ITG tries to send the message that he is not someone to mess with.
The Big Bumper
Having no useful knowledge or opinions to contribute, the bumper spends all his time bumping what others have shared. Now everyone does this from time to time, but if you type that 5-letter word more than 2x/day I'm looking at you
Mr. Magoo
Magoo likes to ask questions, but somehow misses the fact that a topic has been discussed before. He also misses the three other threads addressing it on the front page. When directed to the other threads, Magoo helpfully ignores them and says his question is different. After all, his question was about using creatine and glutamine TOGETHER.
The Contenda
As in, coulda been one. The Contenda is always commenting on the accomplishments of others and comparing them to his own. Whether it's comparing their physique, poundages or professional achievements, the Contenda wants you to know that he could meet or beat you if he really wanted to.
Unfortunately, the Contenda misses one key aspect of his little struggle with the rest of the world: no one gives a ****.
The Parasite
The parasite is self-explanatory; he exists for the sole reason of feeding off whatever board he's participating on. Contributing little to nothing, the parasite draws attention just to feed off the posters.
The Quotemaster General
I'm a firm believer in personal expression, so sig lines seem like a good idea to me. Unfortunately some people take it to great extremes, where their sig lines take up a ¼ page and need to be scrolled through.
This is particularly frustrating when the person has multiple replies in the same thread. You want to share stats? Fine. You want to show us how funny and/or deep you are? Cool. You want to pimp your website. No problem. Just know when to stop. If I wanted a long list of random quotes, I'd buy a copy of Bartlet's.
Post Whore
Many bumpers evolve into the much dreaded post whore, whose only purpose it seems is to accumulate posts. With such gems of wisdom as "I agree," "me too" and "I heard that somewhere," the post whore manages to accumulate 1000s of posts without ever really saying anything.
Secret Squirrel
Somewhat related to the mole, is Secret Squirrel. Squirrel is a regular poster who takes on a new name to avoid having his comments attributed to him. Usually this is done to attack a friend or prominent board member without repercussion.
This is cowardly, even for the Internet where most posters are anonymous to begin with. If you don't have the balls to be accountable for it, then don't say it.
Faux Guru
Under the impression that having people following his advice grants him some sort of god-like omniscience, the Faux Guru distributes (questionable) information at will. Having mastered the basics and knowing just enough more to be dangerous, the FG espouses wild theories and advice on training, nutrition and supplementation.
This information is usually based on one-sided research where any information that contradicts these theories is helpfully ignored. When definitively proven wrong, the FG usually avoids the question, tries to discredit the references used or attacks whoever dares to contradict him. After all, his guru status is much more important than the truth.
The Stunted Troll
Every board has trolls, even moderated ones. Unlike most people, I like having a few around for entertainment purposes. The only time I get upset is when they fail to provide any comic relief. Trolls should be funny; otherwise you really are just wasting everyone's time.
Witch Hunter
The witch hunter is always out to make someone the bad guy. Whether it's someone's business practices, the advice they give or some imagined slight, the hunter is prepared to rally the troops and cry foul at a moment’s notice. It doesn't matter if the allegations are true, it's just really important that the accused pay for the horrible crimes they've committed. Whatever the hell they are.
Lemmings
Unfortunately, this is a rather large group of people that proves that the online communities mirror the rest of the world. Lemmings typically find someone to follow based on some perceived attributes.
Rather than learning to think for themselves, they never question and blindly regurgitate everything their master says. There's nothing wrong with following the advice of those you believe in, but if most of your reasons for doing something start with " [insert guru name here] said..." then you may want to keep an eye on that cliff you're heading for.
The Pied Piper
Closely related to the messiah, the Piper is someone who shows up to lead the lemmings around for a short period of time. Unlike the faux guru, the Piper lacks any real knowledge and gains followers by insulting and trying to discredit others. Sooner or later the piper believes his own hype and attempts to become a Faux Guru. The result: have you heard of Icarus?

Bingo! If one hasn't done even basic DD, getting upset with the person offering correct info is the second wrong they have committed. The anger needs to be directed towards the people passing patently wrong info, not people offering the correct info. Not to mention those gullible that posted the wrong info, they need to be responsible for their actions, instead of whining when others correct them.

I think the reason things get snoped is to prevent MIS-information getting spread around as fact. I'm a big snoper whenever people e-mail me these outrageous stories. One friend in particular is constantly sending me E-mail that is full of crap. I know, I wouldn't want to repeat something that I thought to be true UNLESS it IS true, otherwise you run the risk of looking like an idiot!!! Scott,
Good points except I think that your numbers are off.;)
I would think that 1/4 of the "members" don't even come back to read what it here or remember that they once were registered as a member.
It is pretty common for about 10% of the active members in any group to do 90% of the work, whether it is working on a committee or helping at a club picnic or posting in a community bulletin board. Nothing new here.
Very few msg boards will delete inactive members. How will they know that the person is inactive? Maybe the person that does not post is afraid to type anything? Maybe they have nothing to add?
There are people who have joined a msg board and visit that board once every couple of days and after 4 years are still at 0 postings. I have seen it. At least they have shown enough interest to register and log in.
Not much that can be done about it.
Man, has this drifted off the first topic. Kind of like sitting at the picnic table and watching the conversation drift all over the place.
Actually - Steve does delete accounts on a routine basis - if you watch the number, everyday, you will see it drop back a few thousand every once in a while.
I'm not sure what his criteria is for removing an account, I only know that he does delete them as a matter of routine PMs.

deleting because you don't post it nuts, what if you just like to check out what others have to say and to absorb information. Some folks are not comfortable posting!!
It's not based on posting to the boards - the software holds user stats, and even if you don't post, when you visit, your IP address is captured and your stats are updated and you are 'logged' as being 'active' on what ever date you visited.
If your account stats show no visits for X number of months/years your deleted.
Like I said before, I'm not sure what guage Steve uses when he is axeing accounts.
But you can visit and not post and still get logged as active -

Scott, advertising is based only on how many unique people who come here per day and nothing else. Anybody who thinks it is based on the number of registered users is misinformed. We do occasionally purge members who sign up but never confirm their registration with an email account. At those times you will often see a drop of 500 or so users. As for those who have registered and are in good standing, I refuse to drop them for lack of posting. Often at very peak server load times we will "dump" load by only letting registered users into the forum. Even if they don't post their registration means something. Also the registered members give us a great way to get out emergency emails when a legislative subject "like the dove hunt" comes up and the general membership needs to be notified.

why didnt you comment on the way members here get treated by others
I know alot of people that have stopped coming here because of the Bashing that goes on question I have is when will it stop

BUT if the mod of the forum agrees with that persons post it tends to go on dont matter whos feelings are getting hurt

Scott -
I wont even pretend to speak for Steve, he'll chime in when he get a chance, but I can tell you, at least from my point, in the forum I moderate (DM) I get 'hate mail' from both sides of every issue - for me it's not 'issue' orentated - it's common courtesy issues - when I start to edit or delete posts is when they cross the line of 1) being relevant to the topic (a little comic relief sometimes is ignored) 2) being polite and respectfull to other members/posters.
Do I have 'friends' that are members here - yes, do they get 'special' treatment in my forum, a resounding NO - and they know it - I PM them and they grip at me - why did you let that pass .... why didn't you delete his comment and you did mine .... you playing favorits ..... your a ....... (my mosted loved one) .... your a forum nazi !!!!
I believe that most mod's are at least trying to do the same thing and again I'll not attempt to speak for them or their forums -
The inhearent trouble with internet forums - is - it's very easy to be 'rude crude and inconsiderate' to others when you don't have to look them in the face -
If we typed, as if we were actually sitting across the table from one another I don't think we would even need this thread. :)

"Forum Nazi!" "Nazi Mod!"
Yup! Those are two of my a favorite monicurs that have been applied to me and probably every other moderator on the site.
One thing that members don't see and are not aware of are the emails, PMs, phone conversations, and yes, face to face discussions that many of us mods have with various members. You have no idea as to the interaction that takes place out of sight and this does include discussions on topics and remarks made by said members with whom we might be friends.
We get accused of having favorites or, as was said to a mod last week, "I know that you and xxxxx are like peas and carrots........" Yes we do have friends on the site, but trust me when I say that we treat the friends the same as others with the exception of the fact that we deal with their indiscretions using other venues of communication and methods. I, and probably most of the mods here in MS, have taken friends to task about comments on the site. You guys don't see this because it's out of your view.
As for the bashing that goes on here in MS certainly that happens. We deal with the more prominent examples using a variety of methods some of which are obvious and others are not.
I think that if you compare what happens here in MS in the regard to members ragging on each other you'll find that it is substantually less than any similar site. One reason I first visited MS is because of the overwhelming amount of negative and personally based discourse that I witnessed on another site that was dedicated to steelhead fishing here in Michigan. What a mess that place was.
We are dealing with human beings, if not 18,000 posters (of course I understood that) then with a few thousand and many more eyes and minds that browse the site without posting. Disagreements will occur and questioning will take place. That's bound to happen. Is it the main focus here in MS? I'd say not.
A case in point is that recurring (I think the count is up to five at this time....there was one in the Coldwater Forum that I didn't see) "cougar photographed on someone's deck in Michigan" thread(s). That cat has been around here like a seasoned pro well acquanted with the limelight and noteriety. Some of the comments, especially when it first made its appearance were taken personally......always a mistake on the 'net....and some anger was displayed. Now the comments have generated into some humor.......a bit of it directed at me  which is fine. By the way Huntingfool, in the last visit by that cougar to the boards, had the most humorous of the comments, but I'll let him share it if he sees this......
The point of all this is that us mods do our job as best we can. Steve runs a great site, the best on the 'net that is dedicated to all of Michigan's outdoor pursuits. We deal with members and make calls as we see them and some of that is behind the scenes with talk among friends like only friends can and sometimes that is quite blunt, but we're friends and that's what friends can do with each other. We don't take it personally.
One final point that I'd like to make is the suggestion that some people simply need a thicker skin and quite applying any hint of a negative comment as a personal afront.

I can't speak for the rest of the Mods, but as for me, I have no friends here....
Seriously, I won't/can't put personal friendship over what's best for the site.
I try to give everyone a chance, and handle a LOT of crap via PM. Sometimes action must be taken immediately, and a PM is forgotten, but in most cases it's handled in a professional and courteous manner.
This thread really isn't about hunting, it sounds more like people are sounding off.

Thanks mods. I don't think anyone realizes how much crap you guys deal with. If they did, maybe there wouldn't be as many issues.
PS. I know cabin fever can't help either.

You know, you are absolutely correct, Sib. I becasme so engaged with the disagreement that I lost track of which forum we were in!
In any case, I think we gave everyone ample opportunity to chime in. Even the Boss made his opinion known, and since we're on the wrong board anyway, I'm just going to close this one now. I am NOT trying to stiffle disent, nor give any particular member or group a favor here, just closing it 'cause it's pretty much run it's course.
Should anyone feel it is required, please put up a new post in Sound Off...
