After getting several calls from fellow retired pier rats to come on down and a few calls from some of my "Eastsider" friends I headed for the Joe. With the company of a few good friends we hit the pier before sunrise. Armed with a wide assortment of baits, the father and son team set up about half way out while we two headed for the end of the pier. After 3 hours of NOTHING we move down with my other friends. Of coarse the fact that they had landed 4 fish had nothing to do with our move. Big "D" launched a smelt and spawn and I chucked out the same bloater that I rigged up 3 hrs. earlier along with a bag. Big "D" had 2 good hits on his skein but but the time he ran to the rod, oh well!!! I was talking about replacing the bloater with spawn when my rod take a slam. What good is a 10 bearing B/R if ya forget to trip the lever? That was one hunger brown, she wasn't go to miss that easy meal. Nice dark hen, 4lbs and spawned out. Well, it all added up to 4 guys, seven hours and only seven fish. At least we had some good company and alot of laughs. By the way, it was nice to finally meat ya Ben. But what did I tell ya agian about walking out on the pier without a pole in your hand? Thank you friends, we'll TRY it again soon.

6 browns ranging from 1&1/2-4 lbs on fresh steel skein, 1 brown, 4lbs on a bloater chub. Add one or two channel cats on skien. ALL fish were caught in the river on slider rigs.

NOPE, NOT FISHABLE.
Martin, good to finally meet you also! I'll have to put my pier rod in my truck just for these occasions!
I did make it out saturday with a couple other guys. Will post up later.

It is fishable but very slow. The fish Martin and I saw caught Friday and the one he landed were the highlights of the pier, and we were by no means the only ones out.
River was VERY DIRTY and tons of debris yesterday and the lake is still REAL cold. Raining now so that will be worse before it's better. Pier still has ice on it and you can see ice floating around in the water.
6 of us fished for 5 hours yesterday and only landed 3 and a cat (2 small browns and a very dark (possible drop back) male steelhead.
Bottom line is if you are looking to kill some time or enjoy the weather have at it, but if you are thinking it's hot and heavy don't get your hopes up just yet.
Had a good time "fishing" on Friday Martin.:fish:

The river is chocolate milk right now and FAST! With the warm weather and melt-off and todays 70 degree forecast with rain, it will only get worse. We fished all day saturday and I saw 9 browns come to the net. Me? well, I had 1 good bite that didn't stick and I got to land one fish when a guys rod next to me started bouncing while he was taking a fish off his other one.
Sixshooter was trolling saturday and he reported the lake temp at 33 Degrees! i don't think they got any takers, but he can post on that. There was LOTS of flow ice and broken off shelf ice coming out of the river. So much that we had to tend our rods from being caught up by the ice...reeling them in a couple of times it was so bad! BUT, a fine day on the water and good to finally get back on soft water...so to speak.

My broker called saying he was going to be in town for the weekend and asked if I'd take him and a couple of friends out on the pier. Didn't have to asked me twice. I hit the pier about 5-A, 1/2 dozen lanterns already out there on the south pier, I was on the North. Newbies are late so I start setting holders and rods. Half hour later they finally show with 6' gill rods in hand, boy, this is going to be a long day!!
Well, to make a long story real short, I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. And we did manage to catch a couple of fish. I thought one guy was going to "Soil" his pants when a tail-dancer cleared the water. That fish gets to fight another day.
It all added up like this,
2 browns on sugar cured king spawn
1 brown on a bloater
1 brown on a BJ spoon
2 steelies on floaters 2' off the bottom ( they almost made it to the net)
All fish on the lake side
So ya take 4 guys x 5 hours ='s 20 hrs of rod time with only 4 fish ='s a real slow day!! But a lot of fun.
Can't tell ya about the south pier cause we couldn't see it in the FOG!!!!!

Good to hear that you guys are starting to get some fish off the pier. I was getting my gear in order today, and I came across my sabiki(sp?) rigs. I used them last year and they worked great. I was wodering what is the legal way to use the rig in Michigan? I think my rigs may have too many hook on them. They came with 5 or 6 on each rig. Do I need to clip a few off? Thanks, and good luck out there this year.:fish:
