I haven't heard of gas pockets in that area. I would be very surprised if this is true. I have been fishing that ice for over 40 years and gas pockets do not usually form. Out in front of New Baltimore Park is a different story. Are you sure he wasn't talking about that area?
In any case, they are predicting rain and warm temps for Friday and Saturday. It is time to start htting the ice with a spud as you walk!. Although gas pockets are rare, you are most likely to hit soft ice due to run-off or drainage in shanty holes at this time of year.

Lot's of open water near Lottivue point. Maybe just current but there are a couple random spots that look like they could be gas pockets. In any case, be carefull.

You definately can not make it around the point. This always opens up early. It is not gas pockets that cause this, it is the sand bars and shallows in the area. Those sand bars extend way way out. One year, I was fishing South of the Point and had a Chanel 4 news-copter filming me while I was pounding the fish! The news was there because I just happened to be fishing 200 yards away from a car that went in trying to drive around the Point! I never did catch myself or the story on the evening news though

I went around the point last night and had to hug the shoreline, i did notice how shallow and sandy it was out there. I would not recomend that for anyone reading this.

near Lottivue point
We found some spots today you could put the spud through in 1 hit......with 12" of ice not more than 3' from it.

I stayed off the lake and concentrated on canals this weekend. One of the best limits on gills for size that I have ever caught and slab crappies that went up to 2.5 pounds.

Hello Folks
I'm familiar with springs on inland lakes where spot sometimes never freeze,
but would like to know what "Gas Pockets" are.
BTW...I was out at Metro yesterday afternoon and seen a huge ship go by which I thought was pretty cool and was the first I've ever seen while icefishing out there.
Thanks

Between the warm temp's and ships breaking up the ice... could be over for the ice soon.

Gas pockets and springs may be the same thing but I have always referred to them as gas pockets due to the fact that there is always bubbles that rise to the top in the open hole!
