Fished to night and did well caught a limit of gils and crappie. But had a question about time and maybe the prefered bait to be used for crappie. I was not sure if the time to fish them was beter after dark or just befor. thanks for the help :
I've caught good numbers at all times of the day over the years, but I would have to say that just before dark and then an hour or so afterwrds has been the best for me. I've been told about them being caught till midnight, but I would bet it depends on the lake you are fishing as to the best times.

this time of the year on fletchers pond you can catch them all day. fish them 1 foot under the ice with a jack spoon , jigging rapala, or small jig and twister. don't need live bait..

IMO its all about the zooplankton, which has a tendency to feed on even smaller subspecies that have a tendency to emerge form the depths at night fall! The crappies are less likely to become victims of larger species at night also.I have caught them in daylight also.Had good luck dustin the ice hole with plain flakes of oatmeal--brings in zooplankton.GOOD LUCK

Last weekend we caught 20 nice crappie and lost about 15 more. I don’t think I’ve lost that many in one night in my life. Kind of frustrating! The bite was so light you could barely see the tip of the rod move. I thought about adding a stinger hook like fishing for Walleye. Unfortunately I didn't have my light bite tackle with me which would have made a big difference. We should have landed many more fish. Oh well, It still was a blast! Almost all of them hit between 9:30pm and 11:30pm. They started at about 8-10ft down in 17ft of water and we ended up getting a bunch just under the ice at 1-2ft down closer to 11pm.

I went out yesterday and cought four realy nice crappie11 1/2''. And that was it do you move on them like You do perch or do you think they quit feeding?Last weekend we caught 20 nice crappie and lost about 15 more. i use a sonar and i dont think you have to move as much as other fish. i think they only feed in spurts. had em going at 2:00pm yesterday till about 3:30pm and then nothing till 5:45. they shut down again at7:00. i could see them from the time i sat down at 1:30pm till i left at 10:00pm. i tried every lure in my box, big, small, min, wax, wigglers, we even tried cut up blue gill, nothing caught fish but the minnows.bigger minnows got the bigger slabs;)
