I recently bought an old outboard motor for $35 from someone and I'm looking for information in regards to it such as year, and anything else you may have. It's a Montgomery Ward Sea King 7HP made by Clinton. It's got great compression and great spark. Unfortubnately I'm not even sure if it runs but it appears to have all the potential in the world. I didn't get a tank or line with it but would love to see if this thing will kick. Can I use ether without any ill effects? Is there an on/off switch? Any tips or suggestions would certainly be appreciated. Right now taking it in to a shop is financially out of the question. So any help you could provide would certainly be appreciated. Here's some pics with the data plate included.

I would not use ether. Ether burns real Hot. Just squirt some gas in the cylinder where the spark plug is and try to pull it. If it is premix, use that.

Thanks Andy. Supposedly 50:1 so I'll try that.
Another thing that concerns me is should I worry about ruining anything if I do it out of water?
Just to get fire I mean?

Those are pretty obnoxious ,ill tempered motors, those walboro carbs tend to tune poorly and the arrangement of the high speed needle going up through the bottom of the carb bowl tends to leak.
The throttle linkage is pretty poor also. And oh yea those hoods tend to rattle, but if she is a runner like most 2-strokes they tend to keep running

Thanks Tonga for the heads up. I squirted some ether into the carb and it fired with one pull. So I'm optimistic for now. Think I'll sand her down and give her a fresh coat of paint now. Then it's getting fresh oil and grease. Can't wait to get my butt out on the water to see if she'll perform.;)

When I was a kid, we had an old 15 horse Clinton on an 11 foot flatbottom boat. That thing would fly  As I recall ours was air-cooled..Is that one?

I am guessing that it is air cooled? I think the only issue with those old motors is that some have rubber impellers in them to keep the leg cool. If that rots out than it could cause some problems. I typed in the model number on google and someone on another forum thought that the model you show was made after 1970. You should be able to run the engine to a remote tank without any problems. I have an eska 5hp thats air cooled and really loud. It runs great though.

I was told anywhere from 70-73 on mfg date. I believe it's watercooled due to the inlets present right above the prop and the outlet rear of it.
