I need some input as to what to do I have a Triton 1756 DS

http://www.tritonboats.com/frames2.asp?cat=3&bid=58

In the past, I have been running a 15 HP. Underpowered yes, but it got me their until I could afford a new motor.

Wife said the other day that she is sick and tired of hearing me “whine” about a new motor. I know that I want to get the Evinrude E-Tec this is not in question. However, at first I thought that a 40 HP would be fine, but I do not want to make the mistake and under power the boat. Should I take a hard look at the 50 HP? I’m thinking about a $300 difference in price.

40HP and 50 HP http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/

By comparing the two, I could not find any real differences. Everything: weight, gear ratio, displacement, alternator, bore and stroke are all the same. The only difference is the full throttle 5500-6000 for the 50 HP and 5000-6000 for the 40 HP.

Anyone have any idea????

I don't recommend exceeding the maximum rating for the hull. But I always say that you should buy as much horsepower as you can afford up to the maximum hull rating. When you're out on the lake you can always back the throttle off a bit. But when you're running wide open and it's just not getting the job done you'll be bummed.

This is just my personal opinion but I bet that most other here will agree with me.

"When in doubt, MAX it out" :D

you definitly want the 50hp, for only $300 more you won't regret it.

you are correct the motors are almost the same,, the top end is where the 50 will have the edge. as for pushing your boat up on plane ,very little diff. but for 300 bones i would take the 50,, this will help resale also!!

Go big or stay home, you never can have to much power. There might be a day that comes and you say to yourself man I wish I would have gotten that 50 hp could really use the extra 10 hp right now. For the cost difference and the fact your wife is letting you buy the motor in the first place. Go big or stay home is my moto.

I don’t know what dealer you plan to go through but see what they now about up coming incentives. Evy normally offers up some pretty tasty incentives early in the year. Like several extra years of warranty

Yes, you are right about the incentive. They are offering $4 cash for every HP or a four-year extension on the warranty if I recall correctly.
