Just curious what the thickest ice you have ever seen in Michigan has been.
I live in SE Mich and have never been up north ice fishing and 24 inches is the most I can remember measuring here.

The most I have measured this year so far is 15 inches on the local inland lakes and thats quite a bit for this area.

thanks
Mattt

I believe it was 1992, on LSC it was about 24" 2 miles out of Selfridge. Had a 20" chain saw and had to spud out the last 4".

I'd say 20+ inches on lake Cadillac once.

Sounds about right,, right around that time there was 24+ "s on Walled Lake,,,, I was on that ice until the end of April.

Fished lake Missaukee a few years ago and was around 20inches of ice. That was when I first started ice fishing and only had a spud.

I've had my 8 - 1/4" Mag III Strikemaster ten years now and I think the first year I got it , we were fEEsHiN' a perch tournament (for shop/friends braggin' rights) on Muskegon lake & I think there was about 22-24" , I remember bending WAAAY down & the top of the screw being near my ankles and I had the butterfly handles REALLY close to the surface when we punched thru...
When you get a perch started thru two foot of ice , it's HARD fro them to back up on ya!!

I paid $239 + 4% tax for that d@mn thing and it's been a great machine!! Finally broke the drill ass'y this season. Less than seven cents a day to own that puppy til this year!
That's TCO I can live with!

I know it wasnt the thickest ice i have been on but a few years ago at the bannana dyke, one day late in the season we were on prolly about 16 inches of good solid clear ice, a overnight rain storm and 50 degree temps melted all 16 inches like nothing. Made the trip the next day thinkin it was still going to be hell to drill thru only to find we wasted a 3 mile hike.

Saw over 3' back in the winter of 2002 I think . . . when the Great Lakes were 90% frozen. Buried an auger on the upper part of LBDN and had about 5 inches to spud to reach the water. That was fun.

Not sure of the year, I think around 1994-95, the year they said lake huron froze all the way across. Was out in friends truck 4 miles on sag. bay and had 30" of ice, auger was bottoming out at ice when breaking through. He thought he might have to buy extension. Vehicles driving out of site that year, and I heard a rumbling on the highway a little bit from us they made out on bay, looked out the window and saw a huge motorhome heading out of site for weekend:yikes: That was great:D

Any of the lakes around Iron River during the first part of March during a normal year have 30" I've seen it many times, but I've never officially measured but I'd guess that I've seen 36". I've seen 16" the first week of January before and January and February are our coldest months.

PS: It's a warm winter if we're not driving trucks on the ice by Jan 1st.
