My son and I have been argueing for at least tow weeks over whether is it safe to take a 4-wheeler over a pressure crack. He says that it is safe to do as long as you find a place that is smooth enough to cross without getting stuck. I think going across a pressure crack is dangerous in any circumstances and if you are going to do, you use an area where other vehicles have been recently. I have tried to explain that it does not make any difference whether or not the ice is safe on both sides becasue there can be very thing ice over the pressure crack and the broken up ice and snow can cover it up.

Please let me prove that I am not getting senile and shut him up.:p

Thanks.

Perchguy Everything you said is correct. I am among the guilty that have crossed the cracks but it is not among the smartest thing to do. So I agree with you a 100 percent.

Crossed a lot of cracks over the years and would say none are actually safe. I was out with a few other guys on Saginaw bay and watched a man and his son go down out of sight into a crack and it was a pretty scary ordeal. I also had one open 10' off bell river but was lucky enough to be on the right side. A Canadian couple was stuck on the wrong side and had to take there sled over a mile to find a place to get accross.Usually cracks are always moving in some sort of way therefore they don't totally freeze over. Just my opinion but maybe getting older makes the fish less valuable?

I agree it is not safe,,I also have done it many times ,sometimes I make it back with out getting others I get wet or break something. If you are going to do it you don't want to be towing anything..you stand a better chance with a snowmobile. still it is not safe and you stand to lose your ATV and if you have to have it pulled out of the lake it is big $$$$$$$

It's not how smooth, how thick, or how built up th crack is that makes it safe or not................It's how fast you drive the quad over it that will determine the outcome. :D

.............getting back over could be another story.

I don't know about crossing with a quad but I have crossed many with a snomobile and even cross about 150 yards of open water one night there was 8 of us on 6 snomobiles one towing a sled we all crossed and no one got wet. I do not recommend that to anyone who is half way sane but it works okay for us crazies. no opening in the ice is safe if you have to cross you want to be moving as fast as possible.

Son, listen to your dad! We were young once and knew it all too. We fell through the ice enough times to prove it!

I bought my son one of those Arctic Armor suits for Christmas. The one that has some flotation to it. He's been known to jump a crack every now and then. He fished with Salmonslammer a day or two before Brian took his famous ride. Out in front of Gino's.
Man I was really pissed that he jumped that crack but what could I do. He was 32 years old at the time. I'm glad the Coast Guard came out BY BOAT and chased all those guys back in. The last week of March 2005. Post dated 3-28-05.
