I am pretty new to fishing LSC for yellowbellies...
My question is for the guys who fish it all the time...
What is your preference for the bottom... Is it over weeds or sand??
Or is location more critical and the bottom does not matter??
I fished today, and has much more action over pretty much a bare sand/marl bottom, than when I was over a weedbed??

I usually tend to look for weeds, espessially in areas that don't have too many weeds. However, at sang, we were fishing a sandy bottom and did ok, it seemed schools of fish(though, the schools were small when we fished it) would come through. However, i usually like fishing weeds, but, then again i have never done too great on perch at St.Clair

I like the weeds preferably the edge of the weeds where the depth jumps from 4 foot to 2 foot w/in 50 yards. I have done well on a sandy bottom but the fish seem more spooky. In the deeper water it doesn't seem matter as much.

Seem to get better results fishing the edges of the weeds out of Brandenburg . Always fished in 5 - 7ft of water but after looking at recent posts gonna move into shallower waters. Tried the mudder thing and never had any good results. Good luck.

I like to fish the sandy areas just adjacent to the weed edges. It seems like a lot of the time that I tend to catch smaller fish when I fish right in the weeds. If I fish the sandy areas near the weeds and if the water if clear I feel like I can draw the attention of fish in the area if they are active to at least see my lure. Mudding the area will also attract fish. I have been doing this for a lot of years and if will bring them in to inspect a lot of the time. Now they do not always hit:lol: Like Ed said, fish seem a little spooky in sandy areas especially if they are inactive but when they are looking for food and active I think that you can draw their attention in the more open areas. The more fish that can at least see my lure when active the better.

What do you use for a mudder? I have been dropping my bait on the bottom which makes a small could of dust but it did not bring in any fish

My attempt at mudding was by using a spearing decoy I made that resembles a perch. Looks good down there . Others I know of use a plastic jug with cement in it.

I use a small mushroom anchor, that are on my duck decoys, I think they are 3 or 4 ounces. Just hook a string on it drop it down, and bounce away.

use the biggest size bell sinker you can buy.
i like to fish over sand with sparse weeds. when perch are hungry they cruise...which has shown me that fishing over sand and using a mudder will not necessarily bring in more fish but it will bring in the biters.
