Need a report on mitchells bay, going to head that way this weekend...do you think it will be safe this weekend to get a quad out there to that 10-12 feet of water or will this warmer weather screw that up. thanks in advance.

Went out of St.Lukes yesterday(wed.), out about 1.5 to 2 miles, end of the tree line and off to the left. Was about 16-18 inches of ice where we were at, so I'd say you'll be fine. As a matter of fact it got rid of a lot of snow that was on top of ice, so take some cleats with ya! We were in 12-14 FOW
and hammered them all day. I would say we caught 300 fish between 2 of us, kept 50 apiece from 9"-14", Chartroues tear drop with minnow seemed to take biggest fish. If ya set up and only are getting smaller fish, dont be afraid to move, thats what we did, was only catching smaller fish 6-8 inches, made a move of about 300 yards and started getting bigger ones. And the jumbos seem to be running together. Good luck

Do you need anything special (insurance/orv permit etc...) to bring a quad over there?

we will have to wait and see. The temps aren't the problem, these high winds can shake things up and with the warmer temps it won't allow the chunks to freeze together.
Interesting question John. In the past they never asked or bothered me. But then I was never stopped on the ice on the queens side with my atv.

John-
I'm pretty sure you need both an ORV sticker and proof of insurance.

Ah, the heck with it. I'll try to ambush those jumbos by boat as they're making their way back to Huron in the early spring! :)

I take proof of insurance , registration and helmet. Never been checked but If you are and dont have the insurance I here its a pretty good fine. As far as ORY sticker I dont think ya need one for over there, I have a michigan one but not canadien.
Proof of insurance, registration, helmet.
BTW, For guys that are looking for some cheap insurance, I went through allstate and believe it or not I got it for 55 bucks for the year.:yikes: Maybe because I got all my cars through them but still seems cheap.

:yeahthat: :yeahthat: :yeahthat: Up in Simcoe it is a must......all of the above.
Also you need a RIGID Hook up for Shanty or other items Towed. No Ropes allowed over there. I think that is a new Law since last year of the year before. I dont get the Insurance thing, but they do require it......

WE towed a shanty with a rope right by the CO's (Conservation Officer's) 2 weeks ago with no helmets on and they didn't say squat.Have to go out quite a ways to find the bigger fish. Last Sunday 3-4 miles out in 10 fow. 4 guys all catching lots of fish 9-12". You'll see a big group out there if the ice is safe. Out and to the left. 18" of ice out there so as long as the winds don't break it up you'll be all set. Last week musta been a 100 pick-ups and cars out at least a mile.

How far out is that form shore? Are there any ice taxis for those who don't have ATVs? Would be a heck of a walk I'm sure...

Are you guys parking at St. Lukes and driving to Mitchells Bay? Is the ice safe enough to walk from Lukes to Mitchells?

imagine a tax that ontario overlooked! what you do need is proof of insurance and proof of ownership...i carry a copy of the title.
You need proof of insurance, registration and helmet, tow bar for shanty. They don't need ORV sticker they all have license plates like cars have on their ATV's.
Yes they run a taxi but it only goes out so far maybe a mile or so not really sure about that you would need to call over there to find out for sure.
It's way to far to walk out IMO we go 3-4 miles out most times. Thats not to say that you can't catch fish in closer we just don't fish in close with all the crowds.

A guy told me you need to call your insurance company and add a special Canadian waiver on for taking your quad over there- if I remember he said around $50 bucks above and beyond you US insurance.
