I hope nobody breaks a leg stepping in that hole. Did you mark it or push the chunk under the ice?

I would rather have some spooked fish by pushing it under the ice then to keep hitting sporatic ice chunks with the snowmobiles that are left by everyone with that same idea. Getting very frustrated about the number of big ice chunks left out there. Not to mention that it is very dangerous! 4 of us went out for a ride last night & all 4 of us hit aleast 2 chunks. Some are partially covered by the snow & you can not see them until you hit them. I had seen 1 chunk 2 foot by 4 foot standing on end out there on Saturday. Not to mention the fact that anyone walking out there unaware of the hole before it re-freezes will be going for a swim. I live out here and am on the lake almost everyday & that is the most ignorant thing that anyone can do. I also fish with alot of success without taking large chunks of ice out. I would hope some people might think twice about doing that anymore or at least have the respect to put the chunk under the ice once they have finished up fishing.

The whole idea of putting the chunk on the ice is to mark the hole so nobody goes for a swim, and if your hitting them on the sled then your traveling to fast for conditions and should slow down. Ice fishermen know that ice chunks on top means big hole so use caution.

Auger=hole=no chunk=:fish: ??? I don't seem to have any problem. It is pretty hard to ride around the fisherman that are not there. Maybe we can get some glow in the dark ice chunks on top to see them at night. Night riding seems to not disturb fisherman. Yes I am considerate about that since I also fish the lake.

still your CHOICE to ride where hundreds of people fish EVERY day they can and some days that the should have stayed home(helicoptor rescues included)......all I'm sayin is be careful....you wont convince everyone to not want to see fish on the big screen...dosent sound like a good choice to go sleddin on the lake when you know whats out there....i hope everyone is courtious to the rest of us (snowmachines included) and dosent push that block under the ice.....especially since people keep driven trucks out there.....

So you also spear fish? Usually thats what the bigger holes are for.

There's plenty of open flat ice for the snowmobiles near the shore because all the activity has chased the fishermen out to deeper water where we would really not prefer to be. Well maybe its not so flat in some spots because your buddy with the snow plow who makes the drag strips all over the place has put piles of frozen slush 1/8 mile long all over the edges. Yea...it sucks to hit those at 90 mph...but its your own "people" who have put it there. If you wanna drive a sled at high speed do it at the dragstrip near shore that has chased all the fishermen away. So now that the sleds have chased the fishermen out to the middle of the bay you still wanna complain about hitting our ice chunks when you're in the area we went to so that we could get away from you and your high speed activities??????
We leave those ice chunks out there to mark a hole so we do not fall into it when walking or driving our quads. I would suggest that you just stay near shore so you don't hit any of them. We drive our quads out that far quite safely because we drive at slow speed. If you want a speed limit on the frozen lake so you don't hurt yourself when driving a sled at 90 mph I'm sure the state will accomodate you with a law so that you are protected from yourself.
Sorry if this offends some people...but the facts are what they are...and I have never had any problem avoiding an ice chunk with my quad or on foot while trying to enjoy the somewhat peaceful outdoors. I'd rather see that chunk of ice than fall into the hole it came from. And by the way....if you see a snowdrift in the middle of the glazed is its probably caused by a chunk of ice in the middle of it. Whaddya want now...a law that prevents us from making a hole in the frozen lake????? The fishermen have been more than accomodating to all the guys that drive sleds/quads right next to our shanties at high speeds. I think its about time that somebody starts giving us some rights and protections.........or at least some privacy since thats all we ask in the first place.

There is no dispute about fishermans rights, it's about the ignorant ones. The way "you" guys (gotta keep up with "your" labeling) are going, "you" won't have any access sites left to get to the lake. By "your" "Please people lets keep our parking" posts, since your littering our nice community up & the latest one about people tearing up the launch sites doing donuts. I quess "you" are doing it to "yourselves". Maybe you should spend your time preaching to the people that are ruining it for others. It seems that at least 70% of fisherman must not know what they are doing by using an auger to drill a hole to fish where it does not cause a threat to another persons safety. I am just glad that they have respect for others not like the other 30% which would be "you". :p

as a fisherman who hates the machines because of the mentality or lack thereof of the operators, i say PUT THE BIG CHUNKS BACK IN THE HOLE when you leave

every time i walk past one of these all i think of is death

dont know if its happened lately, but hitting one of those things even at moderate speeds (50 to 70 mph is nothing on a sled) in the dark could prove fatal

the fishermans argument that theyre leaving it on the ice to mark the open hole is nonsense...theyre just too lazy to put it back or more likely, because they hate the sledders like me, they're leaving them out as "road hazards".

putting the big chunks back in the hole is fine when its cold enough to freeze solid in one night if not your laying a trap for some one the next day.....either way marking the hole with a stick isnt a bad idea either

if your going that fast on a machine before you have scouted the area on open ice eventually your going to wreck...take your time through an area check it out before you go flying through...one piece of shove ice at high speed and you wont have any more worries ,,,,just not worth it

Either or putting the ice back in the hole or leaving it out depends on if it is going to be cold enough to freeze back into place, like what walleyeman has described.

If you know you are going to be making a hole big enough for some one to hurt themselves in one way or another you should definitly mark with something. One of the best things to mark it can be a branch from a pine tree. You will visaully see that a lot better than anything else.

Just stating that because when you go to lake Simcoe you see it all over the place, from all the big holes that the stationary shanty's used to be at. It is also very noticeable when it is darker out too....

120 mph is nothing in a porshe or vette but for some reason you don't see vettes running around at 1/2 throttle just because they can...

Are you kidding me? I seriously doubt that any fishermans intentions are to harm a person on a machine. If you guys can't avoid objects on the ice much like you do on the road, then your simply driving to fast for conditions PERIOD. You should always be able to stop your vehicle ( atv, sled, car) in the distance from your position behind the controls to the end light from your headlights shining on the ground in front of you. If you cant stop in that distance your simply traveling to fast.

Get serious, nobody wants to see anyone get hurt.

shadow... I think you and Koby are on the same page... he is just pointing out how stupid some people are on sleds...

I was pointing the fact that he mentioned people leave blocks on the ice for the sleds to hit.

Due to the fact that I have been almost hit by more sleds than even coming close to falling in a spearing hole I don't have much respect for most of the sledders out there. First ice I had some idiot doing donuts around our shanty. I have had them pass within 25' of our shanty doing in excess of 80 mph. Two years ago we had three sleds pass our shanty less than 10 feet away and you want us to respect your "rights" or privleges. My biggest worry taking my sons fishing is not falling thru but gettin hit by some idiot. If you don't want to hit something, slow down or check out where you drive before you drive. All in all, the sledders are more of a hazard than the holes. I agree with the others, mark your holes one way or another. One way the sledders that are riding irresponsibly don't like, the other is probably better. I personally put mine back in and mark them with a branch. If you don't like the ice chunks, stay on your drag strip.

i happen to also snowmoile...not on st clair but other places...i dont leave ice chunks out to cause any crashes or any other malicious intent....and i really hope noone gets hurt OR damages thier sleds...i know my wife and kid enjoy watching the perch as much as i do....at least my boy cuts half the hole nowadays...(almost 15)...think i've got memories of big ice holes older than most peoples snowmachines....hope he does too....cant wait to come out and catch and release more perch than i can eat....i only want a few for me....be safe and please mark your hole in one way or another.....

Last week I was out near Brandenburg and we had this guy come within 25' of our shanty. There were several fisherman lined up parallel to the shore and he split right between us. No matter what sport, activity, hobby, or whatever we talk about there is always that 10% that makes the other 90% look like @ssholes. Fishermen included. Last week some douche left a beer can out to mark his hole. I don't care if you are coming back or not, there's no excuse for leaving a can full of water on the ice.

That's when it comes in handy to have your "10% pole" on hand.

Just take an old pole, and tie on a FAT jig and toss it at the mofo. Now that's malicious:evilsmile I won't think twice about doing it during the summer for jet ski's. It would be a little harder to come up with an excuse in the winter though;)

Go easy there Jarhead!
No sense in anyone getting hurt!!! Not just for being stupid. If that were the case, my knuckles would never stop bleeding!
