kcud-rellik and I went out pike spearing for the first time. We set up on a small pond that supposibly had alot fo pike in there. After we got our hole made we get in the shanty and cant even see jigs under the ice. we moved to a lake and set up there in about 5-6'. Got the hole made and set out our decoys(live ones). After fighting with mine for 20mins it settled down. we were sittin there talkin and trying to catch some panfish that werent even around. we got set up in this spot around 5:00. around quarter to six it was starting to get dark out and we thought we werent going to see any. we didnt even have panfish around us. about 6 a clock a pike poked threw his side of the hole. It swam out and came back in and he got it. it was pretty sweet. im deff. hooked on pike spearing. hope we can get back out with this warm weather coming in.

Good to hear. I've found that you can still see til about 6:30 depending on the clarity of the lake. Some guys cut up potatoes, or use egg shells, minute rice, anything that'll sink and it light colored will add a few minutes to each night.

The guy at the bait shop here in town told me that some guys take his dead perch minnows and sink them for a silvery backdrop/fish attractant. I've never tried it but the idea has merit.

We tried putting some corn down (3 or 4 ears) and it didnt help much because we were on weeds. Deff was awesome to see it swim in nudge the decoy n then chill in the middle of the hole waitin to get hit.

I hope to get back out this weekend. But I do plan being out all day on the last day ( the 28) for one last spear chuck.

Lima beans are key to spearing for me.

Duck Hunter ...
Try spearing in 8-10 feet of water .... and you'll see many more fish daily. If you utilize a darkhouse or material shanty ... you'll also be able to spot fish on the outside edges of your trough.

I was out today and I had a monster come threw. Totally blew it. I was standing up adjusting my decoy line and then i look down to see a pike looking at my decoy. He was easing his way in as i was trying to get my spear. He got about 3" from my decoy and i started to panic a little. when i grabbed teh spear i moved to quick and he took off. man what a rush. it was awesome, cant wait to get out there tommorow morning. i was in about 7' today. going to try deeper.
How many and how far down do you set your decoy(s)?
