CHEBOYGAN, Mich. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw has completed its first assists through Great Lakes ice, clearing and grooming a path for ships to the east and west of the Mackinac Bridge.

The 240-foot icebreaker spent four days around the Straits of Mackinac, stopping at the Coast Guard station at St. Ignace, the Cheboygan Daily Tribune reported. It returned Thursday to its Cheboygan home port.

"Some of it was about six feet thick and we broke through it just fine," said Cmdr. John Little.
