Took my two youngest (8 & 12) out to Selfridge today. The pressure crack at the channel entrance was ugly going out and had 4-6" of standing water coming back.

Fished from 11-4 (#@$% daughter's hockey practice). Started fishing about a mile east and slightly north of the launch and kept working east in about 4-6' of water. Moved around a lot. Found one good school. Got a dozen keepers (8-12"). They all hit on Koby's 'rig' and wigglers. They had no interest in anything else (jigs, glow worms, spoons, etc..).

IFD,
I was pulling in around 4ish to scout exactly what you mentioned. I didn't walk over to the edge , but I did see a quad going out. I'm thinking of playing hookey in the a.m. and was wondering if I should bring the quad. Is there an area to still get across safely? I'm sure this wind tonite won't help.

im telling you, theres really something to that "magic rig"....im still trying to figure out why its so good...dont know what it is, but it just plain gets em....especially when theyre neutral or negative like they are now

if youre new here, do a search for "the ultimate perch killer" for a pic

good job icefishndad...its tough out there right now...too bad you couldnt have stayed till dark...most of the action is taking place the last 1.5 hours before sunset or after sunrise

As far as getting across the pressure crack, I had no problem with my quad. As I was leaving the launch, I stayed to the far left of the channel (to avoid some weak ice others have warned about) and when I got to the crack, I went to the far right.

I wonder how long this ice will last with these temps in the upper 40's.

Think the ice will still be strong enough for a quad to be on by this weekend?

Think the ice will still be strong enough for a quad to be on by this weekend? in my experience there will be no effect on the ice until all the snow is gone...the insulating effect works both ways...even then it is the sun that weakens the late season ice...if it stays cloudy it is really amazing how long the ice can last...now in an area with runoff from melting snow [creek mouths ect] those are to be avoided...but i guarantee there will be a festival involving hundreds of cars on the ice in fair haven this weekend...

I fished SANG from 3:15 - 6:30 and was lucky to set up right near some schools. Had action all day and the fish were still biting when I left. Ended up taking over 2dz home but no real big ones mostly 8-10s. Saw a few bigger ones that would stay on the outside of the schools but they would usually end up getting spooked and not coming in for the bait . Fished in about 3-4 ft of water south of the launch and never had to move my shanty. 3 other guys around me had about the same luck.

the "magic rig" is the hook/bead/shot....... while i've dubbed the others the "magic jig"

ive never even bothered to try the magic jig though...dont need to

if you use the magic rig right now when the big fish are coming in and not biting, you WILL get them to bite

it has to be tipped with a wiggler, and when they come in, just lay it on the bottom...then you will see the magic
