Looking for a new 8 - 9.9 kicker for my boat. Ran across Nissan's on the web and they are awful inexpensive compared to Yamaha/Honda/Mercury. Anybody have any experience with them, or does "you get what you pay for" apply?

I'm stuck in the same situation also. Looking for a 15 horse 4 stroke for my dinghy and everything I have read has said nothing but good things about the nissans. They are made by tohatsu and heard that merc's all the way to 9.9 hp are also made by tohatsu not sure if this is true maybe someone else could chime in. You pay more for the branding rights on the nissan and mercs. but supposedly have better resale value which doesn't concern me cause I'll run it until it dies. I have a buddy in South haven that has a 15 horse nissan on his dinghy and hasn't had any problems, just wish I could afford the honda though. Hope this helped.

Thanks for the update. I bought the Yamaha T8 with all the bells and whistles. Didn't want to chance it.

From what I understand or what was told at Cabela's on sunday is that Tohatsu is no longer building Mercury.

Nissan is building all of the Merc 4 Strokes under 15 Horse.

Nissan and Suzuki are used pretty extensively in salt water and hold up well. Yamaha still remains the Power of choice for saltwater.

I have a Nissan 5hp as my kicker, the motor is an 02 4-stroke and typically starts with a couple pulls. I am very satisfied with it and would buy one again.

yes it is kind of you get what you pay for,,,if you want the very best in a 4 stroke you probably want a yami,, but plenty of people are very happy spending less.
