For the last few years I have been hearing about great Laze Ice Augers are. My good old Mora 7 inch needed new blades the other day so I decided to try a Lazer out. We like to fish for pike so I bought the 8 inch model. As far as I can tell, its no better than my Mora and maybe not as good. Has anyone else noticed this? My son thinks its because we are using a large blade. Is it possible that I am doing something wrong. The next time I good out, I am going to take both augers and see which one works best. I will be you know what happens.

comparing apples and oranges.... take a 7" lazer and compare it to your 7" mora.

oh, i should say you are cutting 1/3 more ice with an 8" auger than a 7", hence compare them of the same size.

My 7" laser was cutting through 15" of ice this weekend like butter. Probably takes 10 to 15 seconds to cut the hole. It cuts A LOT faster than my 7" mora!

Man, you must just have to think about cutting a hole with those lazer's, because my Mora zips right through. Even this weekend on a private pond with close to 2' of ice, I drilled 8 holes without breaking a sweat. I do keep a close eye on the blades and touch them up if I even think they are getting dull, but it only takes about 30 seconds with the dremel. Does all the bad rap for Mora's come from folks not knowing how to sharpen them? I know that the one time I used a standard knife sharpener on them I was melting a hole, not cutting. Lesson learned.

How do you go about sharpening Mora blades? Every time I try it, the blades are worse than before I tried to sharpen them. I have a Dremel tool.

If one is a 7 or 8 inch, I will gladly take it off your hands.
As for sharpening, I use a small cylinder stone bit, one that I can reach the entire length of the blade without removing them. The key that I found was you want absolutely no bevel on the bottom of the blade. ONLY sharpen the top of the blade. I just match the angle on the top that was original, if I can feel any burring on the bottom I smooth that off carefully. I did use a sharpener once that put a bevel on both the top and bottom (one I use for my broadheads) and like I said above, I pretty much had to melt through the ice, even though the blade was razor sharp. I, also, think it is a good idea to keep them sharp rather than let them get dull, then sharpen them. Might be harder to get the right angle once they are dull. I've only touched up my blades twice, but they are sharp enough that you better not run your finger along the edge, and they cut plenty good enough for me. I've never used a Lazer, so maybe I don't have a comparison, but growing up we cut a lot of holes with a lot of different tools, and that little Mora is easy by comparison. If you look at Mora's website, they tell you exactly what I wrote. Due to the angle of the blades, other brands may be able to have a bevel on both top and bottom, but the setup for the mora is if you get even the slightest bevel on the bottom, you need to put all your weight over it to get the edge to cut.
Hope that helps.

On a lazer you don't have to put any weight on the handle to get it to cut. If I remember right a Blue Mora you have to put weight on it to get it to cut.

Thanks for the information. If anyone is interested in buying an 8 inch Lazer, send me a PM. I will let it go at a very good price.
