Fellow Fishers, Can you please detail sight fishing, isn't it just looking down the hole in shallow water for the fish, can't you do the samething with an underwater camera? Are the rods used shorter, say 24" or a palm rod setup? Thanks.

Sight fishing is associated with all of those things....except the camera. That would be TV fishing!:) It is simply looking down the hole and watching the bait get taken/disappear allowing faster hooksets and moving your bait away from dinks to biggger fish. Another thing associated with sight fishing is a sore back from hunching over the hole! As to the camera, if you can see the fish you don't need a cable and cam hanging down from the ice! I guess it could help you kick back to fish and avoid the sore back!

We do that on higgins, down to about 25 feet, I enjoy watching the fish as much as catching them.

another trick i saw on michigan out of doors is to drop potato slices on the bottom then you can see the fish swim over them creating contrast. This is also used in spearing. maybe this will help

You ain't kiddin' buddy....when I fish that way I tend to lay on my stomach to look in...I put myself out of work for three days by leaning over a hole for an afternoon!

I sight fish on certain lakes when fishing shallow weed beds . It tends to save alot of bait " especially when there are dinks in the area " . I just lay on my belly , put the hood of my jacket over the hole so no light gets in and let my eyes adjust to the water . eventually you see bottom clearly and are able to watch your bait . Pull away from dinks and let the danks hit it . Its a great method , unless you have slushy ice , than you have no choice but to fish above the hole or get soaked .

Lake St Claire is almost always gin clear and sometimes the schools of perch are an awsome site. So is mr Musky when he swims through.
In a shanty it's no problem seeing down 12 feet.
