You can park right off the road with an easy walk to the bay. We park at my moms house but public parking is right down the road by the party store (South end)

Headed to Gull tomorrow for some smelt action. Any suggestions on parking and where to fish would be appreciated. Plan on looking around for a lot of shantys and going from there. If any of you could help thanks alot. A friend of mines dad is saying off of a point bye a confrence center and I have no clue what he is talking about. Seems as if most of you are fishing the Bay and I really dont know the lake well enough to know if this is the same area he is talking about.:help:

wheres gull lake located?
Gull Lake is a lake in the U.S. state of Michigan, located mostly in Kalamazoo County with the northern tip extending into Barry County. The nearest major cities are Kalamazoo, 11 miles to the southwest, and Battle Creek, 13 miles to the southeast. The name was probably derived from the seagulls which at times come inland from Lake Michigan in large numbers. The total surface area of this lake is 2,030 acres, with maximum depths of 110 feet. This deep, clear lake has numerous holes in excess of 75 feet, and has one large island in the south end. The shoreline of the lake is fully developed, and is ringed with homes and cottages. A notable sport fishery exists in the lake for rainbow trout, lake trout, land-locked salmon, smelt, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch. Given the proximity of this lake to large centers of population, coupled with the extensive number of riparian property owners, the lake is extensively used by boaters during the warm summer months, and can become quite congested with water traffic.

Thanks cobra! Thats what I needed to know. Can you get perch anywhere around there too. Never fished it, but might give it a try this weekend. Would like to fish last couple hours of light, then try for smelt after dark. We fish for them a lot up north (Higgins, crystal, green lakes). Do you fish them about the same? (Hali's with waxies or spikes under a light.)

I'm surpised the Bayview doesn't put up a sign and charge a little something. That way they could make a little coin and get people to park where they want them to.

There actually is no "public" parking by the bay of Gull Lake. Places that people park are Private Property and it doesn't make them happy to have unauthorized use of their parking by the public. Don't want to see anyone get towed.

Honestly haven't fished it in years and it's only 15 minutes from my house. State put Salmon in it and nearly wiped out the Smelt, stocking was stopped and the Smelt are coming back strong. Access is a PIA now, had a friends Grandparents that lived on it but they moved south. In my view, it is a great fishing lake but access to where you want to get is limited at best on hard water. Plenty of other waters in the area with solid panfishing, no hassle access and little crowding. Never cared much for Smelt but they are a blast to catch, had no problem in giving them away to family and friends. There are some HUGE fish of all types in that lake.

They are starting to park at the north-end public access launch (there is a fee!) better have a four wheeler or snowmobile from there tho to get around the lake.....we used to catch some dandy perch off of baseline bar to the right of the launch that wasn't too bad of a walk!!, plus you can put tip-ups out right in front or anywhere on that lake for that matter, for the numerous and very large pike in there!

When yall are talking about fishing in the bay, are you talking about on the south end near the marina, where people fished last year. Or are you talking about somewhere more to the north?

Only place that had any type of marginally safe ice last year.

Well I guess I'm just gonna try it.Had my fishing partner cancel on me though,so if anyone wants to meet me there, I've got a shanty, submersable light, heater, bait and many years of smelt fishing experience. Probably heading out early afternoon. If anyone is interested, send me a post here. Would also be willing to pick ya up if your on the way.(from grand rapids).

I was out in the bay for about 3 hours last night. Action was slow to none. Ended up with about 10. Talked with others in the area and it was the same for them. Maybe later this week when its warmer.

I was on the bay last night too.First time ever. Got 34 before 11:30 and then I couldn't buy a bite. I wasn't out as far as everone else(about 35 feet), but the fish were there. I should have had many more, but was only hooking about 1 for 3.
