got the chance to go out for the first time this winter this past friday, february 9th. got on the ice at about 10am, with my uncle and cousin, who coincidentally lives 2 houses down from our family cottage. fished most of the day on a bucket without a coat on because the sun felt great, but as soon as the sun started to hide and wind picked up, apparently the bite turned off.
we ended up keeping about 20-25 keeper bluegills (6"+) in a few hours of fishing, and managed to hook into 3 nice pike on tipups that were spread around the area we were fishing. The biggest pike was 32", with the other 2 coming in at 26" and 28". All 3 of them hit on 4-6" crappie.
bait of choice today was spikes on a hot green/white teardrop, and also a rainbow -ish wirey looking jig (weirdest tackle i'd ever seen lol). most of the fish we caught were in 38 fow, hanging 1-2 ft off the bottom.
as this lake doesn't really have public parking, i'd advise going down during the week, and parking off the road.
On a separate note, does anybody have spare room in a shanty this weekend on any local lakes around grand rapids? as much as i'd like to drive an hour to fish, i'd much rather stay local... shoot me a pm or message on here if anybody has anything planned. thanks
