I have a 1967 glassmagic fiberglass boat.It currently has a 50 horse Evenrude but i can keep it running.I have a relative that is willing to give me a mid 80's 18 horse. This may be a dumb question but will it push my boat? Thanks for your replies.
Gene
It'll push it, but not very fast. Any motor beats none.

Well it's probably not going to impress the ladies or pull a skier out of the water...but it will move your boat. ;)
TONGA from this site works on outboards, you might want to try shooting him a PM about your 50. He might be able to help you out. Good luck!

Is it a Magicglas boat? I have a 14' er. I use it as a duck boat. Took out the wheel and the front deck and turned it into an open bow. Is the 18 a tiller or will it be hooked up to steering? With 2 people and some gear it will move as others have said but getting it to plane out will probably be hard to do.
Now if it was aluminum you would be good to go.

I wasent going to say anything but going from a 50hp to a 18hp is a big diffrence, wouldent you guys think there could be a saftey issue with it being so under powered? Is there a chance you could get the 50hp fixed? Cya Slick

The operative word is PUSH. The 18 will PUSH the boat through the water while the 50 will PUSH it over the water...

Are you trying to go upstream at all? If so... you might want to re-think the 18 hp. If you are just going to go out and fish... the 18 will move you around the lake but not very fast.

c'mon what do you mean you cant keep the 50 running? do you mean it fires but wont stay running? or it runs for a few mins then losses spark? or do you mean it has a melted piston and a connecting rod hanging out the side of the block???

Also how long is the boat? I would try and have the 50 horse fixed if possible.

The boat was given to me by my grandparents.I can get it to run but only for like 1-2 minutes then it just stalls out.Im going to get it looked at but i have a relative that is willing to give the 18 horse to me.The boat has a steering wheel and is a deep V.I plan on using it out on the Detroit river in early spring for some pike and bass. What about using the 18 horse as a kicker?Befor I put it in the water i want a machanic look it over and tell me if it would be worth putting money into it.Good looking boat clean fresh paint & carpet. Thanks guys for all the help.Happy fishing and boating.

Sounds fuel related to me. Bad fuel pump... air leak in the line... or no venting resulting in vapor lock.

Ok yea kind of sounds like fuel but it could be hot electronics,, you are running it in water right?
Is the motor the same year as the boat? If you don’t know maybe tell us how many cylinders she has? And the shape of the cover? How many hard cables come out of the control box? Dose it say electro shift, hydro-electric, or anything of the sort on the motor? Can you find the model number on the metal tag on the transom mount and post it. Lets figure out what exactly you have and before you start running up a repair bill,,, also are you any kind of a mechanic , I mean could you pull off a tune up on say an old small block Chevy or Ford?

did i miss it or did you ever mention the size of the boat?
an18 will be servicable as long as you not looking for speed on a 14 maybe 16 foot.
in the long run you will be happier paying someone that knows what their doing to get the 50 running properly. could be somethiing as simple as your gas oil mixture not being right. or overheating. whens the last water empeller you put in?
