Without seeing it I can't really say for sure, but it sounds like you put the canvas on too tight. In other words where you screwed the canvas to the back of the sled, you didn't leave enough fabric for the front bars to reach all the way to the ground.
Speaking from experience, it is fixable, just have to undo all the screws again and leave a little more extra for the front bar to touch the ground.

If you set it up when it was warm .I probable did touch the ground ..Like they said start over allow a little extra

I set mine up in a warm garage, later out on the ice it was like yours. Had to take the screws off at the back and let out more canvas so the front bar touches the ground and some slack in the canvas. Looks like I'm not the only one that did it wrong.

I'm glad I froze my fingers out in the garage (not heated) to put the canvas on. Looks like I avoided this problem without even knowing about it.
As far as your problem, I'd agree with the above statements.

Neil, to keep the skirts down while windy, use some 1/2 conduit inside the skirts. The little added weight keeps it down. My buddy uses that way with his Shappell.

I third that, and if you add runners to the bottom, you'll have to let it out more.

Was there extra snow under the sled when you set-up? That can cause this to happen as well. Shovelling under the sled base helps somewhat.

After you drill your holes pull the shanty over before you scoop out the slush. Pull the skirt down and throw the slush onto the skirt. When you're ready to leave just kick the frozen ice off the skirt.

i do what mike the elder does. it works great. go buy one of those small kids shovels. it works great for the snow too when your out there. just let most of the water drain out of the slush so it doesnt freeze solid

Hey, what do you know................I am not the only one to screw it up. I thought I put the braces on wrong or something. I do have the runners too, guess I will be redoing mine tomorrow. Could not figure out why it was off the ground 3 or 4 inches, with the wind blowing in. I was thinking .............this sucks.

Yep, had that problem today too. I kept my foot on the bottom bar to hold it down, i tried to use the slush to go under it, but, it didn't work. With the wind blowing so much, the shanty was constently moving, and i had major drafting. Even with the heat at full blast i was pretty cold, i am guessign the temp inside the shanty was still under 30. I think with less wind though i would be fine, that wind was gusting over 30 today on the ice, lost a bucket and almost lost my shanty :yikes:

This has been my expierence. With the wind blowing hard we all set up with our back to it. The wind blows under the sled and into the shanty which then acts like a sail and puffs up lifting the front up. Before you start loosening any screws, set it up in a wind free area, like the garrage. If it lays flat there, you have no problem, it's the wind. If it is 3" off the ground in the garrage then I would say go with the loosen screws more material remedy. Good luck.

The slush from your hole works good at the front edge of your shanty sled also. Hint: If you set up on a patch of snow then no wind can get under your shanty. If there is no snow then you go with the slush trick. Drill an extra hole if you have to.
And here I thought I was probably the only guy in the world who had to put his cover on twice, once in the warm basement and again after it leaked......I feel much better now.:)

also, i use those extendable support bars near the door and stretch them out so it keeps the bar down. i've been thinking about getting some of these puppies too to hammer into the ice on windy days along that bottom bar (does anyone use tent stakes?)

Usually when the wind is howling and lifting the skirt. I put a layer of slush in the skirt olong the sides, after tucking about a foot of skirt UNDER edge of tub on a trap pro. Pack slush here too. Then I set my buckets on the front flap and that way it will come off the ice easy, use the zippered door to get in and out. Mike

As I was surfing this site, as a new member, I was surprised to see this thread. I just put together a fish trap scout and had the same problem. I let out a few inches of canvas, and screwed the moulding back on and now all is well. This is a great site. My first week as a member, and I'm learning already.
