I like my ICOM. I got the best price at http://www.boatersworld.com. Not everyone likes ICOMs just ask Gone Fishing...:hide:

ICOM. I asked the same question from a CG officer. He hesitated, because they don't like to recommend brand names. I then asked, "what kind of radio do you have in your boat". Nuff said.

Spend the $$ for a DSC. That is where you can interface a GPS to send yoru signal to the CG, if needed, by a touch of one button. Get one with Class D DSC, you call talk to others with Class D Privatley on the VHF.

I’ve had good luck with ICOM’s in the past but I bought 2 new 402 models and they both intermittently have transmission problems. I have them matched with new Digital antennas. They check good with a SWR meter but both still have occasional transmission problems. :(

Icoms are always very highly regarded. Maybe GF's were a bad batch.. I installed a new Uniden 525 last year, and am pretty happy with it....

Last year I upgraded by vhf with a unit by Uniden. I liked the unit and
it works great. I bought the radio with the DSC for the added safety
of being able to contact the Coast Guard in and emergency and they
would know my location. There is a process you have to go thru to
register with the coast guard. It doesnt seem to complicated but I didnt
get around to it right away. Soon after I ran into the St. Joe coast guard
on a routine inspection. I asked them about the DSC. They said they were
not yet equiped to handle calls with it and they didnt know how far in the
future they would be ready to handle it. FYI.
Maybe the system is up and running now. I havnt checked.
