Wandered into Home Depot Super Sunday looking for chain oil. Walked out with a Dyna-Glo portable heater. It's like that Mr. Buddy from Gander. Had them on sale for $56.00.

I have one of those Dyna-Glo heaters, I have been using it for 2 years. I have found it to be a more reliable heater than the Mr. Buddy! Thats a pretty good deal though, mine was $100!

Had the Buddy Jr. for 1 trip. The slightest breeze would blow it out!
Any problems with this brand?

i got one of the dyna glos also, got it for 40 bucks a year or two ago. so far no problems.

folks, these style heaters are not the ones to use if there is any kind of breeze where you are putting it. it will blow the pilot light out, guaranteed. now, for inside shanties or pretty well closed up deer blinds.... LOVE EM!

i saw them at h depot in howell, lots of them. all 56.00, but i own the big buddy and the little one. love them no problems at all so far. the little one was bought back when they first came out.i used the big one at deer camp this year, antrim county, on medium in a tent. very warm:) :) . the dyna-glo looked alittle more cheaply built imo, i went there to buy one cause thats a good price, but i walked out without it.oh yeah, they are less BTU than the buddy but use the same amount of propane:confused: :yikes: hope this helps some people:dizzy:

im pretty sure mine is the same btus as the buddy heater of the same size. I dunno. It is a little differently made, but I don't know if i'd call it cheaper really.... there isn't much to either of em. and the dynoglos have a cover for the propane bottle and a carrying case that carries the heater (with or without bottle), and two extra bottles.

i have both, haven't really noticed a difference in performance or anything... I actually like the one hand priming and ignition on the dynaglo better than the two handed one on the buddy heater, but enjoy both of em.

Not to hijack the thread but I had the big buddy heater and as msu stated any breeze and its all over. Take the $50 bucks and go buy yourself a mr. heater heater/cooker model. lightweight and serves a dual purpose. Nothing like warming up a can of soup, hot coffee, or anything else you like hot. Makes a nice hot snack to warm you up on the ice.....

msu, now you got me rethinkin it. i did not see on the box that it came with a cover that holds the heater AND 2 bottles. that would be nice, might have to go back to h depot.those igniters they put on most anything suck, i always just plan on using my bic to light stuff. one of the guys i fish with uses the heater that mounts on top of a big tank , very hot, almost too hot, but it always lights and you can use it in high winds. to much for me though.was gunna buy another buddy just to have around, might have to give the dyna-glo a try.buddy is 9000 btu on high dyna-glo say 8000 btu on high. not much dif in a 4x6 shappell;)

I have had 1 of these models for 2 years now.Its works great and definately keeps you warm.It has been conveinant on cold days for warming up coffee and food. Its light weight and easy to carry around. The only draw back is that gets too hot for a small shanty and its difficult to use in small quarters because it can easily melt the side of shanty.:yikes: They will burn up the small bottles of propane pretty quick also. They sell for roughly $40.
As for the Mr Buddy heaters I have brand new one Im about ready to tell someone they can take it and shove it where the sun doesnt shine.:help: Maybe I will take it back and go check out the model that greelhappy is talking about. If it stays lit and is more reliable then its worth it.I have seen these models and they do look similar to a Mr Buddy.I`ll be checking them out a little closer.

the way i see it is:

if you have a one man shanty that can keep a decent amount of wind out (ie fishtrap pro, etc.) then the buddy heaters are good to use (especially if you put it on top of a bucket on the inside). I also have been known to take aluminum foil and put kind of a shield in front of where the pilot light is on windy days to help out (cuz with flipovers there is still a little residual wind if you put the heater on the ice).

if you have a large shanty, or if you are in any kind of windy environment, then look elsewhere. the heater/cooker is a good idea for those, but just be careful about any tarp material and your fishing line!

I had the Mr. Buddy for a couple of seasons and was always happy with it but this season it won't stay lit, I found a thread here (http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/showthread.php?t=170145&highlight=heater), seems its a common issue. I did run it on a 20 lb tank with no filter so I may have induced the problem myself. Anyhow I replaced it with a Mr. Heater 8,000-14,000 BTU’S/HR Tank-top Propane Heater. This is a great heater if you have the shanty to yourself and can set it where it wont melt things such as wind blown shanty walls. After reading this thread I stopped by Home Depot and found the Dyna-glo Double Tag-a-long Heater with variable heat output of 7000 to 16000 BTUs for $56. I used it at Bolles Harbor today and loved it.

When I got to the store it was the last one and another guy was looking at it. I just hung around hoping he did not buy. Once he left I grabbed it and a four pack of propane. This unit holds two propane bottles.
