I was wondering if anyone out there has fished Sanford Lake? I have heard some stories of several big muskies caught in the lake, but no real reliable sources.

If there are muskies in the lake, how do you fish them in this particular lake?

My father-in-law lives near the lake. I have never fished the lake, but last summer when I was up there, there was a Musky tournament going on. I never even knew that there were Muskies in the lake. It was reported on the television that no keepers were caught that day. My father-in-law told me that if you can catch a keeper, you hold a good chance of winning the tournament.

So I know there are Muskies there, but I have not heard stories of great success. Other people probably can speak better to this. I know my father-in-law and I plan on trying it out this year.

Scrubby, there are definetely muskies in sanford lake. Im not a muskie fisherman directly. But when bass fishing in the summer we encounter these big nastys frequently. Usually when spinnerbait fishing or when realing another fish in. It usually happens when your in your own little world fishing away and then say GOODNIGHT to your lure and maybe the fish you were realing in. It seems as if i never get one on the rod with spider wire or with heavy line. As for how to catch them i could not directly tell you how. However there are several muskie gods around this site that may be able put you on em the correct way. If you look on the DNR website you will find data on muskie plants. Im not sure if they have planted in the last several years but i can tell you there are some large muskies in the system. There was a 51 incher caught through the ice this year. The picture is posted in the local bait shop in Sanford. I believe the fish was 35 or 37 lbs. I live in sanford and fish it atleast 3 times a week.

Sanford Lake as well as the rest of the chain has a decent amount of muskies in it. Sanford has the highest density right now. Sanford muskies can be tough fish but when they turn on it is fun. I haven't seen many big, big fish from Sanford, but I was lucky enough to catch a 55"er this past summer. This picture is in the photo gallery on this site, it is titled Sanford Lake Terror. Sanford, Smallwood, Wixom, Secord, and Ross all have fish in them. There will be a small group of people fishing them on Sanford on the opener, we are going to meet at the county park to compare notes, and have lunch,(if enough people show up).
Let me know if your interested in meeting and having lunch on opening day, lunches will cost six bucks, beans, burgers, hot dogs, and potato salad. Possibly a small raffle of muskie lures. If your interested email me at mskydan@aol.com All proceeds will go to support the Michigan Muskie Alliance, a muskies inc. chapter here in Michigan.
