View Full Version : Best basement target?

I'm going to set a short 12 yard range in my basement. My target will be up against the concrete wall. Any suggestions on a very durable target that isn't super thick? I can use a block, but just wondering if there's thinner targets for basement use that will hold up well, yet arrows won't it the concrete after some use. Understand my question of what I'm looking for? Will a good bag target stop a carbon arrow shorter/faster than a block?

I was looking at a Delta 36" bag target too.

an old davenport or loveseat has usually worked for me.

A new bag target might be okay if you aren't shooting the same spot every time but I'd stick with the block target and be sure that the concrete wasn't an issue.
just my 2 cents.;)

You can get about 4 bag targets for the price of a similar sized block, and I've yet to see an arrow pass thru a bag target that wasn't all shot up in the same place. Either way, you're on the right track.

I use a Morrel crossbow target. It is about 24"x 24" and suspend it from a pvc frame I made.It has lasted two seasons, but most of my shots are toward the center.I did replace the cover this year, and in doing so I moved the "stuffing" towards the center for reinforcement.Haven't had any pass thrus with my Switchback, however did put one thru the finished drywall when I set off my release a little early. She hasn't noticed it yet,by the way.:)

I just stuff an old feed sack (burlap bag), with empty water softener salt bags, and hang the feed sack with twine or wire from the floor joists.
Hang it with enough slack that the bag swings freely upon impact, this absorbs much of the over penetration problems.
I shoot a Matthews FX 75# pull.

Morrel Outdoor Range. Its big enough to be able to move your shots around.Alot of clubs use them. I've been shooting mine for a year now and its not even close to worn out.

Here is a link to a company in Michigan that has received some good reviews. http://www.spyderwebtargets.com/range.html

Whatever target you select, make sure you don't have any aresol paint products anywhere near it in your basement. This comes from personal experience.

More personal experience. Make sure u do not put ur target infront of your sump pump discharge pipe:yikes:. I now have two targets stacked front to back for double thickness.

I have a 20 yard shot diagonally in my basement, but unfourtunately I have to put my target infront of where my sump pump PVC discharge pipe runs up the wall and then out of the house. I hit a soft spot in my bag target and the arrow stuck about 6 inches out the back and into the pipe, breaking it. Unfourtunaly it hit above where the back flow check valve is so it let loose about 5 gallons of water that was in the pipe above the valve from the last time the pump ran. :fish:

Needless to say I felt like a 4 year old trying to convince my wife that everything was OK in the basement and that she did not need to come see "what that noise was" LMAO. Lucky I had everything I needed to fix it and I did not have to explain a late night run to Home Depot.

So now I stack two targets back to back to "prevent" this from happening again. I still giggle about this every now and again when shooting in my basement.LOL

Yes, I learned this one with a BB Gun when I was 16. I also learned to paint walls shortly thereafter.

Let's just say my experience with aresol paints wasn't as minor as cleaning up a mess. Could have been very very bad.

If you get a bag target, take it down and fluff it every other day or so. It moves the contents around and will prevent arrows from going thru.

Before you let anyone else shoot at it, ask him if he's recently dropped his bow  :dizzy:
