Hey everyone,
I'm stuck down in Kzoo at Western and it looks like I am going to have a little free time in the next week. Looking for a lake(s) that have Ice around the area that I could fish. All my gear (vex/shanty) are up north where I normally fish. I do have my rods and a bucket though! Any ideas of lakes that are in close to Kalamazoo, easily accessible, and contain gills, perch, or walleye that I could try? PM me if necessary. Thanks!:help: :fish:

I also go to western and have been having trouble getting away from class to check out more lakes. A lot of the ice is still pretty shady to me. Have you ever tries asylum lake? that is right next to WMU, I have never actually fished it but heard some good things. Hopefull with this extreme cold this weekend, the ice will really thicken up some. let me know if you discover anything good.

I go to western as well. Would liek to find some good spots to fish around here. Any info would be awesome. Sundays high at 3 degrees should help alot with ice thickness.

Asylum lk. is a good bluegill lake, and is close to your school.
Lakes out by me are frozen pretty good,Gull Lk. in the bay, and looks like the bible conference in the next day or so, 3 lakes has had guys on it for a week, campbell, (but you need a park sticker), Austin, and Long in portage.
Good luck in school, and on the lake!:)

Walked out to check out Asylum this afternoon (even before I read your posts). It didn't look as if anyone had been out yet. I did carry my spud, but didn't ever check the ice because I didn't feel like walkin though a foot of snow w/o boots. Does Asylum have many springs? Freeze fast? I've also heard that Asylum has a ton of dinks....anyone verify?

people were out on asylum on sunday. 3 or 4 groups i believe. lilyduck and sully_123 were out there and said that there were a few being caught. but the ice was a bit shaky then, don't know how much good the snow did for it though. pm lilyduck if you want more info from him.

I will be over in Gobles which is just west of K-zoo to fish on the weekend of the 24th and 25th to fish for bluegill. I have friends over there that know the area well. Im not sure what the lakes are named. I'll ask them and see what info I can get for you.......

Hey Guys, I go to wmu too. I tried the lakes in Fort Custer wed. with no luck. The ice out there was really iffy too. From what I hear the night smelt fising on Gull is pretty good. We'all should set up a few trips to the local lakes. PM me if your interested.

I went to WMU a few years ago and iced fished all the time on these lakes down in the State Game area hogsett is very good for Crappie and Big Gills and Gourd neck is pretty good to. If you go to Hogsett park at the park walk out and head south, gills in weed beds and crappie out deeper. I always could find crappie there in deeper water, some big ones too. Fished baseline in allegan to and caught big bass and pike on tip ups, no panfish.

Hogsett lake is very good at times for gills. Fished there Sunday put 18 nice ones on the ice in 1.5 hours. Had to leave son was getting cold. I see they took the inner gate out, leaving the outer gate now locked at 6:00Cannot access the outer parking lot with that gate closed. Anyone know if you can park on the road and walk in now? Shame to miss that last hour of good bite. Crappies after dark can be great too!:)
Hogsett is great also, but be careful. As of 2 days ago (did not check today) there were still geese swimming in the open water. That lake usually freezes real late. But nice perch to be had so worth the effort when it does..
Finally word of caution for anyone who fishes around Marcellus. My uncle fell throug on Finch today. Fortunately just the one leg went through up to the hip as he was in 22' of water. There is still some really spotty ice out there!
