Steve I asked the same question a while back and a member gave me a local location and I hit the jack pot.
You cant find them at Gander Mountain but an RV/camper shop or propane dealer may have them.Unless you find a used one expect to pay $30-$40 for one.I happened to get a bargain deal and got the tank and filled $20.Worth the effort if you find one.
Yes Gander Mountian carries them. Also you can find them at some propane supply stores.

We carry them at Menards. I think the 5 lb was 22$ and the 10lb was 27$.

We had some in stock cause Worthington Industries shipped us 5 pallets of the wrong size tanks. They were supposed to be 20 lb tanks. I know that is cheap, but everything at Menards is cheap. Call the Jackson store Plumbing dept. and ask if they have any. Or call the plumbing and ask for Rob(thats me) and ill check it out for you. The price is low because its an end of season item. We are currently changing over to spring time items. The number is 517-748-3676.

I have seen them at just about every store that sells propane tanks, propane grills, or propane appliances. Check out the full service neighborhood hardware stores (but I have not seen them at the chain hardwares like ACO--they might have them but I have not seen them there.)

Cabela's has them. $43 for the 5, $48 for the 10. A 20 lb tank is $29.99.

I have an old 10 lb tank that has the old style valve in it, the propane store said it was $24 to change the valve, I might as well buy a new tank for those prices. Thanks for all the input as to where to buy them.

I take the old 20 lb tanks to the hardware store. They charge an extra $5, maybe less, to exchange the old empty tank for one filled with propae and with the new OPD installed. Surprised that there are not some retailers doing that with the 5 and 10 lb tanks.

I got my 10 lb tank filled this fall and it has the old style valve. I asked about it and was told the new style valve is on on the 20 lb tank. I didn't ask any more questions and took my filled tank and left.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the correct way to do it.
