My Mr. Buddy heater was shutting off on me about every 30 minuets last weekend. I spent way too much time fooling with baby sitting it. I read the posts on this forum and see I am not the only one with this problem. The seasons too short and weather too cold to deal with this another weekend. From the research I have done it looks like the dual fuel Coleman is the way to go. I saw one in Cabelas bargain cave and thought to myself, gasoline in a lantern :yikes: . Anyone here ever use one? I figure if I can use it for heat and light, less to carry. From searching the net it looks like Dick's at $89. is the best price I can find it local. Appreciate any input, know of a better heater? Let me know,
Thanks..........:)

I've had the northstar right when coleman came out with it and for light, it's the brightest latern I own. It can help break the chill, it does in my shanty, but for heat, I've used the Coleman Focus 5 that runs off 1lb. bottles of propane, at least the last twenty years or so. If you do grab a Northstar, I would consider getting a amber globe. As always electronic ignition mandatory!

We were using No-Lead gas in the stoves and lanterns long before they came up with the dual-fuel idea. If you've got an old coleman , just run it on no-lead.

WOW!! If its the same lantern (Duel Fuel), Meijers and Walmart had them for $50-55 in Bay City and Saginaw. Thought of getting one myself but wanted to hear how good they were first.

Best Lantern you'll ever buy!! If your fishing out of a one man fish trap....it'll heat you up enough to take your coat off....any bigger shanty though and you'll need another heat source to be able to strip down the coat and be comfortable ......the only thing you need to be careful about is transporting it around and not breaking a mantle....there fragile ....so bring extras just in case!! As far as burning unleaded....I never did just because I figured the coleman fuel would burn cleaner in the closed envirement that you'll be in!!

True.
I went as far as calling Coleman and talking to a live person about the use of unleaded and Coleman fuel in the Dual-Fuel appliances. Their answer is that if you want brighter and better lighting then use the Coleman fuel. The Coleman fuel will also burn cleaner as Kevin mentions.
Using unleaded gasoline in Coleman lanterns, stoves, and heaters that were not designed for it will work but it is not recommended. Problem is that since the unit was not designed for burning that type of fuel it is not effecient and often will not burn properly or completely.
Coleman fuel is a highly refined and filtered fuel. The user could always run the test of trying both fuels over a weekend. Recommended to run the tank empty of one type of fuel before filling it with the other.

I just bought an electric start dual mantel propane Coleman from Bass Pro yesterday for $35, but I think they have it on their website for $30. Its great, super bright, it does put out heat, but probably not enought for days much below 30

Is this what your talking about? Also, is this something that you have to "pump" to get going? Never used one with coleman fuel or un leaded gas

That's the lantern I use. Yes, you pump it to build pressure. I use the Coleman fuel. It is duel fuel but someone told me once not to put gasoline in it.
This is all I use to heat my shanty. It doesn't get warm enough to take your coat off but it warms just enough to be comfortable. The only problem is that I go thru mantles like crazy. I usually keep a set with me just in case I get out there and one has fallen.

go with the northstar.its alot better then my other duel coleman lanterns. they are about $100 on ebay so $89 is a good deal. the dual lanterns work but the northstar is brighter and alot more durable.
