For the second time in the past week I have spotted two coyotes on Lake St. Clair about 1000 yards off my dock. Just wondering if I were to set up a shanty or arrange some sheet ice if I could create a blind, then using my electronic caller get them in range. Obviously, I would need to be away from the shore a good distance. Is it legal?

I would think you could.as long as disschargeing firearm's is legal in your township, and you were more than 450ft. from a house. If it were me,i'd get permission from my neibors, put some bait on the ice,and wack'em from my back porch:evil:

I asked the qustion in the rules forum. It is legal. The lake is considered state property.

Yes it was st. clair. I too spotted fox and yote on the ice. I got within 200 yards of the coyote when he spooked, and I was running at him like an idiot.

I guess the canines love to use the ice as a highway. I read they would rather run across an open space then take a more impeded path with more cover.

If I knew how to put up fur I would go out and take some.

I've had really good success hunting local lakes at night in the area where guys were ice fishing during the day. The song dogs venture out to pick up small fish left by the fishermen. I've used all white cover-ups and called with good results.

I know a quit a few fellas who use this technique. Wait till the wind is blowing out from the shore, the yotes will try to get down wind, if the ice has no snow on it ya might get a shot on multiples because they might have trouble getting goin.

I was woundering if Lake Michigan would be ok to hunt on. I ask because by my inlaws their seem to be a lot of yotes. The promblem is there is no land to hunt them on. They have been seen running down the beach. Its park township so its ok to shoot there. I also wounder about Lake Mac.

Talk to the guys on Drummond that run snow machines. They see them on the ice up there all the time. See a few fox's also.

I hurd that they frequent frozen lakes quite a bit!
They scavenge fish and minnows left on ice by fishermen!

Its not just food, coyotes go onto the ice during mating season to mate to I've heard.

The coyotes are going across the marsh I trap. I just set three traps for them tonight. They are checking all the muskrat houses for food.

I used a 2' piece of 2X4 with a hole in the middle to stake the trap. I ran some cable through the hole to the trap chain. I then spudded about 2" deep and bedded with buckwheat hulls then covered with light snow.

when i was on the ice breakers upin the NLP and EUP we'd see alot of yotes and fox out on the ice, especially in the spring once the weather would warm alittle. Even seen a few wolves, especially around the area from moon island down to LI. on the ST Maries river. Now Neebish had loads of deer that would cross from Canada to neebish and vise versa. Damn thing was the'd wait till be blew through then the'd run to the track, jump, fall in and then go across. seen a few dead from that but mostly the eagles would be on them, never any fox or yotes.
