In reference to a thread that was in the Upload forum that involved using bird shot and .22's on yotes. http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/showthread.php?t=170509

Anyone ever tried?

I would think the general concensus would be no way in double hocky sticks, but some of the posters are quite convinced that bird shot brings down yotes just fine:rolleyes:

Thoughts?

I've always just used m .300wthby for yotes in the Dakotas.

I've taken yote's with bb shot and fox with 2's.[both mag. load's]I read that thread, they used what they had.I probley would have done the same if the yote's were after my beagle.I would think that 5's or 6's would kill a yote out to 20-25 yd's.I do wonder if yote's would 'hunt' a beagle.just my .02

Around the farm we have killed several with 6's, because thats what was in hand at the time. If we were going out after a coyote we would try to grab my 10 mag with bb or #4 buck. If I had yotes coming on beagles I would give whatever I had.

I know a red fox is not a yote, but I killed a red with 6's at about 25 yards. It tangled with my bird dog. In the instant that it happened, I could not for the life of me figure out why a fox would take on a 45lbs shorthair, figured it had to have rabis or something. BOOM! Turned out it was in a trap. Felt horrible for the trapper, but it was on state land and how was I to know? Guess it still bugs me that it happened, and I never had a chance to explain to the trapper.

Yotes will hunt and kill beagles and bird dogs as well they will lure them away like they are playing and the rest will surround em like a gang jumping your in the alley it is a fact. I have an english setter and she is a playful dog she would fall prey to this tactic in a heartbeat. She is a pet first bird dog second but I will defend her from anyone or anything that wants to harm her. The question is not what do you use to hunt coyotes with it is what would you do to protect your dog? As I said mine is an okay bird dog but a beloved pet Timberdoodle who is the owner in question has champion dogs a lot of time and cash involved in these dogs. They are some of the best you will see and she takes them very serious. What would you do when a coyote comes looking to kill your dog on your hunting grounds? We are not talking a domestic dog here we are talking a wild canine that kills when the opportinity presents itself to survive. Nobody goes out to hunt coyotes with bird shot but many do with a .22 which is what she was carrying so lets lay off and remember a coyote vs a championship or common beagle which is a pet what do you choose do you shoot or do you watch your dog get ripped apart by three coyotes?

simple answer IMO

Took a small one out with 3" steel BBs earlier this month sneaking in to attack my BFs while goose hunting @ 25yds, no problem. Dead Coyote has taken them @ 45yds but it's getting rather expensive to shoot. Loaded up some 1 1/2oz lead BBs to try, should work fairly well @ 40yds. 'yotes will go after anything they believe they can. Things are getting bolder every year.

Number 4 shot is a great load for yotes, it puts them right down out to 30 yards, and a .223 is a great rifle for those long range shots.

once with a 20ga with 8s and once with a 12 with 9s and killed them both at very close range. I wouldnt advocate using that light of shot, it was what was in the guns while hunting rabbits and they were so close I shot and killed them.

Heck yes, we have killed MANY yotes while turkey hunting over the years running right to our decoys using #4s, oh and before anyone says you cant shoot them then, we hunt on a working PIG farm and have year round access to shoot yotes on THAT farm.

.22 LR hollow point in the ear usually works just fine. only good yotes are the ones skinned and stretched on a piece of plywood.

well after reading all the post's,I think I should watch out for yote's when i'm running my beagle.I alway's worry when i'm hunting snowshoe's in the u.p.[I know a guy who lost his dog's to wolf's]I did'nt think yote's would mess with dog's much.guess I was wrong

I shot a 31 pound female with a 20 ga and #4 shot. It was during a snowstorm and I walked up to it while it was bedded in the snow. I could see the ears pointing up above the snow. About 20 yards.

I've snared two yotes in the past that when I skinned them out there was
bird shot in there rear ends.:yikes:
I would imagine if you were close enough and had a good head shot it would K.O. them.

I have shot about 4 yotes off of point in Iowa. All of them rolled like a rabbit and never even wiggled again. These were all shot with 12 gauge 6 shot high brass loads. I don't believe that to be an effective coyote hunting load unless you can successfully draw the yote with in 20 yds.

How do you guys think a 1 1/2 oz. load of BB lead would do at 1300 FPS ?

If I could keep the pattern together out to 50 do you think it would have the power to kill em' at that distance?

BB is a good load for yotes I would try to keep my shots under 40 yards when they prime up late in the winter.
