well after this morning's set i decided i need to get a new howler. chris_kreiner and I set up around 7:00 after he gave a howl, we heard them answer back and they were off, they hung up at 200-250, 3 of them sitting in a little group, and there was one up by the fencerow, so 5, chirs was facing them, i was on the other side of the tree, watching the other way, chris waited as long as he could but i couldn't get them in my scope(that tree wasn't bein a good rest) the one he hit was facing him, with a 17 hmr. we lost blood after 3/4-1 mile. i took a shot at one trotting away at about 300 yards,(with a .243) it looked like i hit it and it yelped after i shot. but no dice. i followed his tracks a ways and no blood o well thats why it's huntin and not shootin.
his howler was a randy anderson howler? it was green and looked like a big funnel. does anyone know the name of this? i think it's not made anymore..? what is a good howler for the money?? what howler do you all use? i have a sceery howler right now and don't like it much. thanks for any advice

First loose the 17HMR for daylight. Second make or buy a set of shooting sticks. The work great set up fast and give you a near bench rest quality rest.

I have a Sceery howler, it is tricky to use and is very tempermental. I just told Chris in another thread about some Custom calls I use. You pay more but they are well worth the money. My custom howlers are made by Yellerdog in Clinton Michigan.

Randy Anderson's calls can work well. Many need a whole lot of air to operate. This can leave you winded after a good session. .

I posted this picture before but look close, A distress call is on the closest coyote and I'm holding a Yellerdog howler. These two were called in is September using howls and distress. Matter of fact the first one ran past me just when I first blew the distress so they mainly came into the howls, in non breeding season.

Hey FISH,
I 2nd the Yellerdog Custom Howler, i don't howl much, but when i do i want something to be able to hear it, my horn howler puts the sound way out there.
It also seems to sound very natural and pretty easy to use.
Here is a pic of mine:

I think i know you from my board, you can find yeller over there or PM him here if you are interested in a Howler.

Good Luck.

Here's a question for you pro's.....I'm just getting into hunting coyotes and I've bought a few differant calls. Some I can work pretty easily and others I have to really work at. But I did buy one of these Scream-n-Howlers they're made by Woods Wise Products in Tenn. it came with an instruction tape and it supposedly is an all in one call. To me ( being a rooky) it seems kind of complecated. I'm gonna need alot of practice on this thing before I can take it in the field..............Has anyone else tried one of these calls????? And if so how well did it work.............Thanks in advance for any info..........:D

back roads,
I am not a "pro" , but i have seen and used a lot of different calls.
Is this the howler you have ?: http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0002LOB5M.01-AVCTWC1TZZ6DE._AA280_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

If so, it's described as a "bite & blow" call. I have never used this style of call before, but i can imagine it would be kinda difficult to howl with. Is the reed enclosed?
I would get yourself a good open reed howler and practice with it.
Good luck-
