This could be the big one....Let's hope the fish build up an immunity quickly.

I wonder if VHS could be part, or a large portion of the reason why the alewives disappeared from lake Huron. I doubt it is the sole factor, but it might have played a part in killing of the very sensitive bait fish.
Then again, if the virus is established in lake Ontario where the alewives are healthy...maybe not.
Bad news overall though. How much longer must the Great Lakes suffer because of ocean-bound ships?!

Sounds like the bad news has been confermed for Huron too. Just what we don't need. I'll see if I can find the link, or post some of the findings by the DNR

I dont think so because the virus wasnt present until 2005.The alewives died off after the winter 02-03.It might be having an effect on the small population now though.Anyways its not a good thing.

I write that, because I read in a Free Press article the other day that biologists performed tests on fish samples from as far back as 2003 on Muskie and/or Walleyes in Lake St. Clair and found the virus to be present. It may be farther along in the Great Lakes water system than we think.

Was at the Lake Huron Advisory on Wed. Kelly Smith said at that time Lake Huron was under a watch but the next day DNR announced that VHS was found all the way to Cheboygan. Sounds like terrible virus but hope it can be stopped. I have the order given to us about it if any wants it faxed to them just P.M. Also, in the paper is web sit www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/aqua/. Sounds like it is going to kill minnow dealers and transporters of live fish. Capt Ed
