Last year, I checked my spots every morning and every evening. On April 13th last year, 6 popped in two different areas. It was interesting since we had an unusual dusting of snow that evening. They were all mostly small, with one going an inch and a quarter. I marked all of them, only to find the smallest one grew 2 hairs larger.. It wasn't much, but noticable.

Two days later 9 more popped near those same places. These were all larger with the smallest going an inch. I marked them again and found two of them growing a couple hairs..again not much, but noticable.

Both groups were left for 5 days and didn't grow again...just dried up.

I believe most of them grow their size during the first night with a few growing the following day.

I have another area that produces the huge yellows in May. I can't beleive they would grow 14-16 inches in a night. Maybe this year I will study that area....

I'm not sure about this one. I have found small greys that I left unpicked, only to return the next week with them the same size. Sometimes I will pick in an area and then return 2 days later and find more decent sized mushrooms that I swear I couldn't have missed the first time. Either they popped up and grew to maturity in a little over a day or I simply missed them the first time, don't know for sure. The mushrooms I found Wednesday were the smallest I had ever seen. I'll check them this evening but I will be shocked if they didn't grow any more. I do recall seeing photos in a book showing the development of a mushroom. I'll look it up this weekend and post what I find Monday (no computer at home). Should be good pickin this weekend! Good luck all.

I find that they do continue growing. I think a lot of it has to do with the day time weather. If the day have been overcast, the may grow for a few days, once the sun or dry air dries them out, they stop growing IMO. I have marked some and came back the following weekend that have gone from almost white and 4 inches tall to 10 inches tall and yellow!

The black morels seem to do most of their growing in one night, but may continue to grow as well.

Good luck in your forays

Well after this year I do believe they grow, I left a few and went back to days later and they doubled in size. I found 75 this morning, making my total 275 so far! About 20 of them were yellows too, so It's gonna be done here soon. :( I'll be heading to the Mesick/Traverse area next week for a week. I'll be coming home with pounds!! :)
